We needed lots of cleaning supplies so just went to the grocery store near where we were doing other chores. It's not our regular grocery store.

My husband, Scott, wanted potato salad for the barbecuing we're doing out on the grill tonight and stood in line at the deli section for quite awhile, it was crowded, but no one behind the counter was doing anything or waiting on anyone! There must have been 6-8 deli people just "milling around." Scott got disgusted and left without getting any potato salad. I announced I'd make him some when we got home.

So, I opened the veggies and ranch dip tray I bought, to keep me company while I peeled the potatoes and realized that I like all the veggies "raw" except for the brocoli so why the heck was I dipping carrots, cucumber slices and grape tomatoes in the dressing? An ah ha moment that came fast on the heels of another.

I never know what to tell my husband to get me for Christmas but we moved last August and I realized all my knives were at least 100 years old and I'd like new knives. I picked out 3 from a chef's catalog and was using one to slice up the potato to cook for the potato salad and realized how lovely/nice and easy it is to work when you you like your equipment and have sharp/new knives, etc. and had the sudden feeling that some of my dislikes about cooking (I love cooking so I'm taking about when it's not so fun like cleaning up or peeling potatoes) might have to do with having dull knives and it behooves me to make sure I have peelers and knives and tools I like and which are comfortable for an optimum experience.

But even that realization came on the heels of one I got as I was unpacking the groceries and putting them away; namely, I think I want to only go to the grocery store when I need "whole" foods -- when I'm out of dairy or meat or fruits and vegetables (or cleaning supplies) not because I don't have any chips to go with the meal; too bad, the chips can wait until a larger, more useful grocery shop. My husband eats more of his cereal than I do of mine (or eats his more often than I do mine) so I buy him twice as much. That way I don't have to "see" the cereal aisle and be tempted by his need for pop-tarts or other things I don't want. I'm going to get kind of hard on him now that he's retired and not buy the pop-tarts (let him do it while we're both shopping. . .if he remembers :-) and other "junk" he wants and likes.

Well, I was peeling a couple potatoes for potato salad but realized one was enough for him as I'm adding a hard boiled egg too to it so I put away the 2nd potato and now there's no way there will be enough for me too. I cook my hard boiled egg in the center of my cooking potato pieces; they take plenty of time so I know the egg will be done too.

Sounds like it was a great "aha" filled day : )

Good for you!

What a great idea! I never thought of doing that, I always have a second pan going.

I also think it is a good idea to let him do his own snack shopping. Especially it it keeps you from going down a "dangerous" aisle.
