LOL!!!!!!!! DS loves to help me in the kitchen. It seems he always has. I even got him his own little "kitchen" Christmas before last and it is in our kitchen.
He was helping me with dinner tonight as usual. His expertise lies in stirring and making sure the table is set with spoons and napkins.
While I was chopping the veggies for our soup tonight, DS was stirring the pot (BEFORE ANYONE HAS A HEART ATTACK, the stove was NOT on. I was letting him stir while I was chopping the veggies first. When I turned on the stove eye, I put DS down to go about his own business.)
Anywhoo, he proudly proclaimed "I'm a COOKER!!!!!!!" I asked him if he knew what a person who is an expert cook is called and he said no. I told him that person was called a chef. For some reason he didn't seem impressed....He just looked at me with a "frank" expression on his face and said, "Well I'm a COOKER!!!!" I could tell he was very pleased with himself and so was I!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOOK OUT KD, you have some competition coming up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is so sweet. I guess I would give people a heart attack. Mine started with cookies and such but I did have him at the stove around 5 -never alone.(we were taught young also.) He had his own cook books and apron.I think the book is an osborn and they come with a small cooking kit- measuring spoons and such.) His little apron was so tiny. I have pics with him cooking. When he was in 1st grade we spent 3 hours making a spooky spider cake for his after school day care. I have that pic also. He was so proud of it!!! I enjoyed those times of closeness so much. Now at 17 years old his gf and him are learning all over (for her a first) to cook for when they will be out on their own. They seem to enjoy it and I am hoping they continue to cook together.
"Those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end"....everytime I hear a story like yours, my little guys come to mind. My little guys are now 18 and 23....both graduating this spring.. and my oldest landed his first engineering job this week. But when I look at them I see toothless little boys "holping" mom in the kitchen...gosh I think I might cry. Enjoy the "cooker" he'll grow up too quickly and you'll wonder where those years went. you've warmed my heart today!
It's never too late to get it right.

Now don't worry, (but I DO worry myself) DS is skin and bones. My little fellow seems to only be growing up and not out but I don't try to force him to eat. I do encourage healthy foods and but I try not to make him clean his plate and so on. I do however "go with the flow" on the days that he seems to be really hungry. There are days when it seems he doesn't eat hardly anything and then there are days when he really eats very well. Well I was proud of the two bananas (actually 1 1/2) tonight!!!! He shopped for them and he enjoyed them and he was also a COOKER!!!
Don't worry about him eating like that. It seems very normal. My DS is 7, and still eats that way. Some days, I cannot fathom where all the food is going that he is consuming. Seriously, one weekend by about 11:30 on Sunday I had to tell him that I wasn't going to cook anything else for him until dinner, because I had cooked for him all day Saturday and then had already fed him 2 breakfasts and lunch. I told him he could eat fruit or veggies or whatever he could get himself. He was asking for complete meals. Anyway, he'll eat like that for a day or two, then he doesn't eat much at all for a few days. I think they really eat a lot when they are having a growth spurt, and then not so much when they aren't. To me, it says that they are really listening to their hunger, and not eating just to be eating.

Just a couple of other things I have to brag on him about (forgive me a bit here folks LOL!!!).
I'm so proud that he notices "healthy" actions. A week or so ago he saw our outside doggie running in our pastures. He said "Look Momma, Rex is exercising!!!" I'm so proud that he seems to understand and notice what an active lifestyle is because he will talk about exercise whenever he sees DH or myself exercise and he will also "run" around and say that he is exercising. I do have to say that I am happy to have a healthy and active toddler (not so healthy for an old momma like me though!!! LOL!!!!)
Also, today at the grocery store he was really helpful in choosing groceries. He helped me pick out veggies and I used our time as a learning experience. We talked about colors and I would ask him if he could find specific food items and so on. Funny but when we got to the check-out line and I started unloading my groceries (with DS's help, of course ), I had a small bunch of 3 banana's in my cart that I had not put in there. I asked DS if he had put those in and he nodded yes, I LIKE bananas!!! Well, I still had some at home and didn't really need any but I went ahead and got these. Funny but for dessert I was planning for us to have some strawberries. Well........I had some strawberries and DS had TWO bananas!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!
