I know, my homework tends to be on the heavy side, so I'm going to lighten it up today. I think many of us enjoy the "getting to know you" type of homework because, even though we're here talking and supporting one another every day, we don't always get an opportunity to get to know a lot about one another outside the food and exercise realm.
Your homework today is to answer at least 3 of the following 5 questions. Bonus: Answer all 5. As always, look forward to learning more about you.
HOMEWORK: 1. Tell us about a skill you have that you've probably not talked about on the board before (i.e., if you're known here as a knitter, talk about something other than knitting). This could be something you learned through formal education, through more informal instruction, or an innate ability you have.
2. Tell us about one book that stands out to you as having had a positive impact on you. It would be most helpful if you could give the book title and author name, a short summary of it's about, and why it stands out to you.
3. Tell us a funny story about something your pet has done (or that you did to your pet). For those like myself who don't currently have a pet, it could be a childhood or former pet or even a friend's pet.
4. What 3 foods (either store-bought or home-made) can make your mouth water just thinking about them, hearing them described, or seeing them on TV?
5. If you HAD to be on one reality show, would you choose Survivor, The Biggest Loser, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, or The Amazing Race? And why?

1. Tell us about a skill you have that you've probably not talked about on the board before -I like to stamp and make cards.
2. Tell us about one book that stands out to you as having had a positive impact on you. It would be most helpful if you could give the book title and author name, a short summary of it's about, and why it stands out to you. -I love the book Modoc which I think is written by Ralph Heller (???). It is about a boy and an elephant that are born on the same day and their amazing life together. It is a true story and I remember thinking I would never read a book about an elephant, but now I LOVE elephants and it helped me believe in myself!
3. Tell us a funny story about something your pet has done (or that you did to your pet). -Just tonight our mini dachshund was "flying" back into the house and went sliding sideways on the throw rug across the room.
4. What 3 foods (either store-bought or home-made) can make your mouth water just thinking about them, hearing them described, or seeing them on TV? -Godiva chocolate -lasagna -anything cheesy and gooey!
5. If you HAD to be on one reality show, would you choose Survivor, The Biggest Loser, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, or The Amazing Race? And why?
-I have only watched the first 2 and I would never do either one of them cuz I am not that adventurous.

1. I can sing pretty well. I use to sing with a chorus group and we went to a lot of competitions and won 1st place three times.(This was in high school.)
2. I'll have to think on this one..........
3. I have a 5 month old cocker spaniel named Missy that I adore. She loves to ride with me in the car. This past Saturday night I took her with me to pick up my dd at a friend's house and we went through a license check. When the cop came over to check my license and I let the window down to hand it to him, she totally freaked. Immediately she was in my lap, leaning out and barking like crazy at him. I guess the stranger with the flashlight, plus blue lights flashing all around was too much for her! Luckily the cop just chuckled.
4. 3 of my fave foods are: carrot cake, pumpkin cheesecake and lobster. It is so hard to just narrow it down to three! I could go on and on with food.........
5. The Amazing Race is the only one I've never seen and I know I don't want to be on any of the others!
1. If you've been around a long time you may know this about me, but I haven't mentioned it in a long time, but I'm fluent in Spanish and speak, read and write French pretty well. I have lived in Venezuela and France. I am also a very good Spanish Interpreter, and have done this professionally. Many people do not understand that this is a skill beyond speaking more than one language. I used to actually be a very good photographer, and even won an honorable mention in the "Cotton, the Fabric of our Dreams" photo contest.(I still am a good photographer, I just haven't done much real photography for a long time.)
2. "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving is my favorite books and made me realize that sometimes the small seemingly insignificant things really matter.
3. One time, after we had been out of town for a few days, my DH sat down in the recliner and set his Dr. Pepper on the floor. Our cat was standing in the hall, and you could almost see his little wheels spinning. He eyed that Dr. Pepper, and ran down the hall, kicked over the can and ran off. Just to let DH know he was disgruntled.
4. Cheesecake, cheesecake and cheesecake. Ok, I really like cheesecake, Thai curry and fajitas.
5. I guess it would be The Amazing Race.

2. Currently the the book that has a positive impact on me is KD's last book.
3. I have a Kitty named Precious...She's no ordinary cat..She greets us at the window, she flops in her favorite spot for rubs..she loves to sit on our shoulder and cuddle..She thinks shes human..
4. Cheesecake (homemade) last one I made was a boston cream cheesecake - yum yum yum Mexican food and anything sweet..
5. I am really not a fan of any reality shows, but if I had to pick one, it would be the biggest loser.
Heather Goodbye excuses!! Lets achieve those weight-loss goals!!
1. Exercise2-3 times a week

1. I speak, read and write fluent Japanese. I learned it in Japan, having lived there for 8 years and been married to my Japanese husband for 16 years. It was like climbing a mountain when I first started studying! The sense of achievement when you start dreaming in Japanese, being able to read more & more, is amazing!
2. When I was younger I enjoyed intense books like "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand (written in the 50's, about the industrial world collapsing). Nowadays I prefer Anne Tyler; my favorite is "Ladder of Years". It's about a typical housewife who suddenly walks away from her life on a summer day. I love it because it so vividly makes you feel like you're in her shoes. I read this book when I was homesick living in Japan; it literally transported me to small town America.
3. My cat Jennifer, a chubby beauty queen of a kitty, looks like she isn't capable of anything acrobatic. But when a bat got into our house, she jumped up mid-air and caught it! (I have it on video )
4. Oh God. How can I narrow it to three?! OKay: 1) my grandmother's homemade pierogies (and I can't get those anymore 2) Round Table gourmet veggie pizza, 3) roast chicken & mashed potatoes!!

I'm with Denise, I don't think that there is anything I haven't shared at this point. I do love horses and would do just about anything to start riding again (unfortunately it's not even remotely affordable for me right now).
2. Tell us about one book that stands out to you as having had a positive impact on you. It would be most helpful if you could give the book title and author name, a short summary of it's about, and why it stands out to you.
The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying - totally changed how I look at life and really helped me not sweat the small stuff.
3. Tell us a funny story about something your pet has done (or that you did to your pet). For those like myself who don't currently have a pet, it could be a childhood or former pet or even a friend's pet.
No pets, no pet story - sorry ; )
4. What 3 foods (either store-bought or home-made) can make your mouth water just thinking about them, hearing them described, or seeing them on TV?
Friendly's peanut butter cup ice cream sundaes Key Lime pie (or any tart pie) Lou Malnatti's deep dish pizza
5. If you HAD to be on one reality show, would you choose Survivor, The Biggest Loser, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, or The Amazing Race? And why?
Without a doubt Amazing Race. I LOVE traveling.
Out of our beliefs are born deeds; out of our deeds we form habits; out of our habits grows our character; and on our character we build our destiny.
Fun Homework! grrlscout - I LOVE the Halloween costume. My cat is also named Jerry.

Well I love to knit and used to make jewelry a lot. I have thousands and thousands of beads in my basement waiting to be made into something. I don't spend much time with it anymore.
2. Tell us about one book that stands out to you as having had a positive impact on you. It would be most helpful if you could give the book title and author name, a short summary of it's about, and why it stands out to you.
I would have to think about this.

I have 2 cats now but have always had pets. When my cat Franklin was a baby I was taking a bath and he was sitting on the edge of the tub. I am not sure how it happened but all of a sudden he slipped into the tub also - not a happy camper.
4. What 3 foods (either store-bought or home-made) can make your mouth water just thinking about them, hearing them described, or seeing them on TV?
chocolate, pizza, breakfast food.
5. If you HAD to be on one reality show, would you choose Survivor, The Biggest Loser, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, or The Amazing Race? And why?
definitely the Amazing Race. My husband and I talk about going on together and we think we would do great. We have lots of international experience, can read maps, follow directions etc. My downfall would be running. If I found out we were going to be on I would start running everywhere I went. No more walking for me. But since I have no desire to leave my kids for that long (nevermind that I have a newborn) it ain't happening.

Wow, very interesting! Your description of your dreams sounds a LOT like mine. My dreams are more often disturbing than pleasant (at least the ones I remember)--not always scary, but strange. I have had 4-5 recurring dreams over the course of my life that were absolutely terrifying, but haven't had any in a while.
I may need to look into that book. It sounds like it has been helpful to you.

There is actually a lot I haven't shared so I'll do this one: I am a notary public. Which, in most states isn't a big deal, but in Florida (and I think two other states), a notary is able to perform marriage ceremonies and I have done 3. The first two ended in divorce (they lasted 3 months and 1 1/2 years respectively), but the third seems to be holding up!!

Oh, my two kitties give us hours of entertainment. We adopted them about a year apart. They both are cats, but have VERY different personalities. The funniest thing that the younger one (Bitty) does, is that she loves to be petted while we are at the computer. She'll plop her butt between us and the keyboard. The funny part is that she will walk across the keyboard if we are not paying attention to her. AND..each time, she seems to have a unique ability to, with those keyboard steps, change some setting so that we have to restart the computer to get it to function properly. Thus, allowing us time to pet her.
4. What 3 foods (either store-bought or home-made) can make your mouth water just thinking about them, hearing them described, or seeing them on TV?
My grandmother's cookies, Ben & Jerry's ice cream, a perfect strawberry dipped in chocolate

By far, The Amazing Race. Dh and I love to travel and we travel well together, I think we would do well. There is NO WAY I could be on Survior, I'm married so Bachelorette is out and maybe Biggest Loser, but I'm not sure.

HOMEWORK: 1. Tell us about a skill you have that you've probably not talked about on the board before. I love to play the piano. I took lessons when I was a kid, but when I left for college, my musical brother sold it for $25.00, one of the reasons, we don't get along...kidding! But I'd love to have another one, even a clunker, just to have music in my life, other than someone else'. It is a great stress-reliever, and I feel so competent when I am sitting there making "noise" that sounds like something.
2. Tell us about one book that stands out to you as having had a positive impact on you. The BEST book I have read in recent history is "The Elegant Gathering of White Snows" by Kris Radish. It is about seven women, who meet regularly on Friday nights for conversation, support and friendship, one night, they decide to go for a walk through the neighborhood, which winds up to be a three week journey through the farmland of Wisconsin. Each chaper highlights one of the women and her struggles, successes and life of becoming a woman and her relationship to the others. It is a fantastic book of women relating to and loving each other. My second favorite is The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. I haven't read the whole thing, because I keep running out of kleenex, it's quite a tear-jerker.
3. Tell us a funny story about something your pet has done (or that you did to your pet). We don't have pets, never have, we have people who wear fur coats and walk on four legs. I have had seven dogs in my life from when I was 14 till present. They have all been hybrids (the new name for mutts) and the best friends I have ever had. My husband WAS a cat man when we got married, and brought it siamese to the marriage for about two weeks, that was it....I am NOT a cat person. Chipper (basset/beagle) is our first dog together...our boys were 7 and 12 when we got Chip. He was a freebie and that was the right price for us. We went in a snow storm to get him, about 40 miles away, my oldest wrapped him up in his coat and zipped the coat shut. When we got him home, just like a new baby, we unwrapped him, and noticed little black things moving in his fur. YIKES FLEAS! It was 10:00 and I made the vet get out of bed, and meet us to give poor chip a dip in the flea bath. Bet both the dog and the vet wanted to go back to their own homes. Chris got a dipping of his own, too. So from that night, Chip and Chris will wrap up in blankets and sleep under the covers. When chip gets to cold he just crawls in and snuggles close to my dh or I. He taught his "baby" brother to do the same thing, and now the bed if filled with beagles/basset, beagles, dh and sometimes me. But no fleas. 4. What 3 foods (either store-bought or home-made) can make your mouth water just thinking about them, hearing them described, or seeing them on TV? Anything chocolate or caramel. Turtle sundaes, anything like that. I can't watch the candy shows on the food network because of it.
5. If you HAD to be on one reality show, would you choose Survivor, The Biggest Loser, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, or The Amazing Race? None of them. I have enough reality in my own life, eat enough strange things that come from my husband's experiments, that I don't need a dose of reality. When and if I watch tv, I need to escape. Give me Brad Pitt, Sean Connery or Montel Williams anyday.
Great homework, Sheri!
It's never too late to get it right.

According to the website... the women are eating about 1,000 cals a day... and of course they are exercising a lot!
I sort of, kind of have half thought of doing that for a week... just to see how much I could lose in a week... but I don't want to injure myself exercising 5 hours a day just for some oddball experiment.
Not to mention... I no longer want to lose any weight... can't see the point in losing 4 lbs, just to gain it back...

I am pretty good at designing web pages. I used to log in here as "geek girl" so some people might have realized that I'm a techie. I have designed some online classes and have done some web pages for groups I'm in.

My two cats are sort of like siblings. They love to hate each other. One of them is a cranky male cat and the other is a younger female. She likes to sneak up on the male and jump right onto his head. He hates this and this will set off a fight where they go tearing around the house. I think she enjoys the chase part and that's why she does it.

Am I the only one that had trouble narrowing it down to only three? This is why I have to think about my weight in the first place. I love food.
My grandmother's homemade plain pizza. I have the recipe but I rarely make it because I could eat the entire pan. I love it hot, cold, five days old...
My other grandmother's homemade mashed potatoes. This is another one where I really have to exercise portion control.
Good bread with real butter. Mmmmmm. Guess you can see that the Atkins plan would not work for me.

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. That was the book that actually got my sister and I to go backpacking. And there are parts that are LOL funny.
And both of KD’s books and Eating Thin for Life.
3. Tell us a funny story about something your pet has done (or that you did to your pet). For those like myself who don't currently have a pet, it could be a childhood or former pet or even a friend's pet.
Our pets are not very funny. The cat hasn’t bitten me in 3 days… that is funny… or odd. If I'm not here tomorrow... he may have have spent his pent up agression and I might be at the ER...
4. What 3 foods (either store-bought or home-made) can make your mouth water just thinking about them, hearing them described, or seeing them on TV? Seeing on TV… Taco Bell commercials…
5. If you HAD to be on one reality show, would you choose Survivor, The Biggest Loser, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, or The Amazing Race? And why?
I’d be terrible at Survivor… I get REALLY cranky when I’m hungry… they would vote me off because I’d be so miserable to be around.
Don’t think dh would appreciate me going on the either the bachelor/ette.
Can I go on Amazing Race with ds? He and I both know how to read a map. It would NOT be good for dh and I to spend so much time together in a car… He is not good at driving when being given directions and he is not good at navigating. We often take two cars when we go on vacation.

LOL! I hadn't thought of it that way (about wearing one outfit for a month) but, you know, those outfits do become QUITE well known. Just think of Paul Bunyan (that's what I call that wild-haired burly dude from a few seasons ago) and you immediately think of tie-dye T-shirt! He wore that thing through TWO SEASONS of Survivor. Yoikes.

Ya know, I haven't clicked on the Homework in a while, and today when I did, it was a sharing one - my favorite!
1. Tell us about a skill you have that you've probably not talked about on the board before
I dunno. I think I've told everyone that I'm a web and print designer. And you all heard my trials of EMT school and fire academy. I think I only mentioned once that I used to be an Archivist. Umm... OK. I was initially planning to go to grad school for Linguistics, rather than Librarianship. So I'm pretty keen on the history of the English language and etymology.
2. Tell us about one book that stands out to you as having had a positive impact on you.
I can think of ones that I truly enjoyed, ones that resonated with me, and ones I will never forget. But I can't think of any that changed me.
3. Tell us a funny story about something your pet has done.
OMG, my dog Jerry is such a clown, it would be hard to choose! The thing that cracks me up now, is that he wrestles with his new sister, Moon. Jerry is mini dachshund and weighs all of 13 lbs. Moon is a Queensland Heeler mix, towers over Jerry, and weighs about 40lbs.
Yet they play! Moon will scrunch down to Jerry's height, and Jerry will try to grab her neck with his stubby little legs. He makes these silly groany-growlly sounds, and they make snarly faces at each other. It's a hoot!
4. What 3 foods (either store-bought or home-made) can make your mouth water just thinking about them, hearing them described, or seeing them on TV?
1) Bacon 2) Pie 3) Pancakes
5. If you HAD to be on one reality show, would you choose Survivor, The Biggest Loser, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, or The Amazing Race? And why?
Definitely not Survivor. I suck at politics. Definitely not the Bachelorette - I'm taken! Biggest Loser - I don't have enough pounds to lose, so I'd get eliminated right away The Amazing Race it is! I haven't really watched the show, so I'm not sure how it goes. I know they get to go to some pretty exotic locales. I'd like that!

1. Tell us about a skill you have that you've probably not talked about on the board before.
I play the guitar. When I was younger, I did sing with a band and played lots of weddings. I have not done anything in about 6 years publically, but I still get asked about it. Now it's just a private pleasure for me.
2. Tell us about one book that stands out to you as having had a positive impact on you.
My favorite book, and the only one I've read more than once, (I'm up to 3x) is Talk Before Sleep by Elizabeth Berg. It is the story of a group of women helping a mutual friend face breast cancer. Each woman has the central character in common, and little else, or that is what they think. It's really a love story of friends, if there is such a thing. The dialog is stunning.
3. Tell us a funny story about something your pet has done (or that you did to your pet).
We took my corgi puppy (he was 9 weeks old at the time) with us to the Macy's parade on Thanksgiving 2 years ago, because he was too young to leave. It was a bonafide mob scene, but holding a puppy makes everyone come up to you - we met 100's of nice people that day because of Tucker!
4. What 3 foods (either store-bought or home-made) can make your mouth water? dark chocolate truffles, twice baked potatoes, and pasta alfredo.
5. If you HAD to be on one reality show, would you choose Survivor, The Biggest Loser, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, or The Amazing Race? And why? 1. Tell us about a skill you have that you've probably not talked about on the board before
I am a trained Correctional Officer. I am not in the field as the jobs are hard to get here, but I did 4 years of schooling in this field.
2. Tell us about one book that stands out to you as having had a positive impact on you. It would be most helpful if you could give the book title and author name, a short summary of it's about, and why it stands out to you.
I have read a lot of fiction, but the one book that stands out the most is Cooking Thin. The way in which KD approaches weight loss has really gotten my mind working. I find myself re-reading it often and not just the recipes. DH thinks it quite funny that I can read a cookbook.
3. Tell us a funny story about something your pet has done (or that you did to your pet). For those like myself who don't currently have a pet, it could be a childhood or former pet or even a friend's pet.
When I was stil living at home and dating my wheaten terrier was very protective. Growing up I lived in a smaller community and so most of the men I dated lived min. a 30 minute drive away. My parents were very understanding of this and if we were out late would let my boyfirend sleep on the couch in the basement instead of driving home. My childhood dog was not so understanding. Doobie slept on my bed everynight and at least once with each new boyfriend (there were only 2 or 3) Doobie would sneak over to the couch when we were not looking and pee in the middle of the bed that was made up, then sneak back to my bed and go back to sleep. It was like her way of saying I have got my eyes on you, back off Jennifer is mine.
4. What 3 foods (either store-bought or home-made) can make your mouth water just thinking about them, hearing them described, or seeing them on TV?
PIZZA - any commercial will trigger the desire, but only the mushroom pizza from our local pizzeria (Nicco's) will do.
a close second is POUTINE - this is a french Canadian treat of french fries, curd cheese and gravy. The cheese must be fresh and squeeky, the fries must be fried not baked and the gravy hot. YUMMY!!!!!!!!
and my last but not least choice is EGGS BENEDICT - This is why I rarely go out for breakfast anymore. I am addicted to the Benedict florentine at my local breakfast haunt. I also rarely make this at home, because then I actually see how much fat there is in the Hollandaise.
5. If you HAD to be on one reality show, would you choose Survivor, The Biggest Loser, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, or The Amazing Race? And why?
Funny you should ask, DH and I are often talking about which reality show we would do and hands down I would choose Amazng Race. It would be something that I could do with DH and get to experience different cultures, places and challenge myself and our relationship.
As much as I love Survivor I do not think that I could handle the inter-personal stress. As for the other two, I just have no interest.
Enjoy every minute!

Goals for April: Exercise 3 times a week. Drink more water everyday.
Long Term Goal: Weigh-in at 180 lbs by my next Birthday. (Sept-13/06)
1. Tell us about a skill you have that you've probably not talked about on the board before...
I can't remember if I've talked on the board before about being a good lip syncher (where you mimic singing along with a record). Back in the days when "Puttin' on the Hitz" was a hit TV show where people competed for prizes doing lip synching, I worked professionally in night clubs doing that. Absolutely loved it!
I also have a certificate in interior decoration.
2. Tell us about one book that stands out to you as having had a positive impact on you.
So hard to pick just one. Instead of using a classic, I'll pick a newer book as the impact is more recent (read it this year).
The Bone People by Keri Hulme is about three broken souls (one a small child) who form a friendship that eventually helps heal them. There are some absolutely horrific moments of child abuse in the story, and yet somehow I have such a sense of love and healing when I think about this book. I think anyone who can describe such ugly things and leave you with love and healing in your heart must be quite an amazing person and author. It showed me that no matter how broken you are...no matter how badly you think of yourself...you have worth and you have the potential to not only impact your own life positively but those of others.
3. Tell us a funny story about something your pet has done (or that you did to your pet).
When I was a kid, I had a toy fox terrier named Scampy. He was the MOST loyal friend anyone could ask for and I put him through such torture...I loved to dress him up in doll clothes and such.
Once, I took him to a Ken-L-Ration dog show (it was just for kids) and entered him into the funniest costume contest. He wore a pink tutu from one of my dolls, a Mexican straw hat from another doll and a huge pair of sunglasses. He stood on his hind legs and danced for the judges, and we won! But he probably couldn't show his face in around the 'hood for a long while after that! LOL
4. What 3 foods (either store-bought or home-made) can make your mouth water just thinking about them, hearing them described, smelling them cooking or seeing them on TV?
Pizza...usually Dominoe's pepperoni pizza. French fries...usually Wendy's or McD's. Steak...usually at The Outback.
5. If you HAD to be on one reality show, would you choose Survivor, The Biggest Loser, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, or The Amazing Race? And why?
As much as I love the show, there's absolutely no way I could survive Survivor. As much as I love to travel, I don't think I'm adventurous enough for THe Amazing Race. As much as I'd like to lose my last 30 pounds, I don't know if I could handle being on The Biggest Loser. So I guess that leaves me with The Bachelorette. Yikes. I don't think I could do that either....I'm a one-man kinda woman! Dating 25 guys at the same time would be too weird.
