I don't know if all the cruise lines offer it, but Princess offers inland lodge stays that can be tacked onto the cruise so that you can explore more than just the coastline.
One thing I've heard about the Alaska cruise is that it tends to be rougher waters than cruises in the Caribbean, which is the only kind of cruise I've done thus far.
Strongly suggest www.cruisecritic.com for your research. Have used it for all but the first of mine and you can find out everything from what to do in port to what to wear to dinner and everything in between.

My friend went on one for her honeymoon and LOVED it. She did say though that most of their fellow passengers were retirees or older so you may want to check the usual make up of the ship you are taking.
They did all kinds of active shore excursions- kayaking with whales, hiking, helicopter rides, etc...
She said it was spectacularly beautiful.
Out of our beliefs are born deeds; out of our deeds we form habits; out of our habits grows our character; and on our character we build our destiny.
I think that Alaska is a good cruise destination. I really can't see flying there and renting a car and driving around. Also, most of the cities are near the coast. But I think that Alaskan "cities" are pretty darn tiny... and not some place you would necessarily go on vacation.
She did some shore trips and got to see wildlife and cultural/museum kinds of things and active kinds of things... and also got the cruise/spa/hotel experience, too.
