Hi folks,

Next Saturday, the 12th, our family along with several other families are taking a day trip on the Amtrak to San Francisco/Fisherman's Wharf area. Because it is a day trip, we are only going to be in the city for about 5 hours, so the family that we are going to be hanging out with and us are looking for either a sandwich shop or a little market near Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf to grab sandwiches to eat on the train trip home for dinner. If there aren't any sandwich shops, then a market would be fine too, because we can grab loaves of sourdough, and some salami and cheese or something at a market to eat with the bread on the train. We are trying to avoid packing loads of stuff because everything we pack and take we have to carry around with us in the city that day.

Any recommendations?

We won't have "wheels", just our feet and some public transportation, although we are on a very strict schedule.....so we'd like it to be close Smiler

Thanks so much!!!!

Blessings,

Lori

Thanks Caine! I do remember seeing that building before....have never stopped there though Smiler Will make a point of it....and I would love to do the museum tour if we have enough time.

As for the weather, I know we're expecting another storm on Tuesday and lighter rain through the end of the week. But the weekend is supposed to be clear. Please don't hold me to that, though; Saturday is a long way off from a weather standpoint and I'm depending on less-than-dependable meteorologists!

Thanks Susan! I didn't realize that Boudin's made sandwiches....we've never done anything that run in and grab a loaf of bread to eat while we're walking around/driving home Smiler That's always been the last stop of the day when we're in SF so that we have a snack Smiler....but I've never gotten a sandwich there. YAY! Thank you so much! I did find the Subway that I remembered being there......I remembered there one being near the hotel that we stayed at on our last "big" trip to SF and I couldn't find it when I was looking at the Subway website, but when I went back today, and put in the correct zipcode instead of just "San Francisco", I was able to find the one that I was thinking about.

I passed on the information about the Subway to the rest of the group that is going with us (there are 145 people going on this trip....some homeschoolers, some Boy Scouts, and some "just friends").

I wish I were going to be there for more than just a few hours, I would have loved to have gotten together with you and Denise, but I knew that this trip was NOT the trip for that! But we'll get together again....Don and I are really hoping to have a weekend away in the sprintime or early summer, just the two of us. We are looking at going to either SF or to Monterey....if we decide on SF I'll let you all know Smiler

Blessings,

Lori

Ah, yes, Ghirardelli! We were going to head there, and may still, but the rule is NO purchasing chocolates to bring home with us....we can have ice cream with hot fudge there, but we aren't bringing any chocolate (or sourdough) home with us....anything we buy that day, is to be consumed that day! Smiler We agreed that we didn't want to bring home stuff that we didn't NEED, and we don't NEED anything, so we aren't bringing anything home.....any food that we buy that day, will be consumed THAT day Smiler

We are very excited about the trip, but I'm having a hard time finding a Subway. I know that there USED to be one near the Holiday Inn Express and TGIFridays at Fisherman's Wharf, but I can't find it listed on Subway's website. Not quite sure what to look up to find a little market in the area... I had thought about walking to the Ferry Plaza, but I honestly think that it will be too far and take too much of our time....we will only have 4.5-5 hours for playing/sightseeing. AND I have a 7 year old that is already going to be worn out from just walking around for 4.5-5 hours Smiler

As much as I don't want to have to pack a meal, I'm thinking if it might be easier.....I really only wanted to take snacks and light things, since we're wanting to travel light since we have to carry everything with us all day.

OH!!!! One more thing....Susan, do you happen to know what the weather forecast is for Saturday?

Blessings,

Lori

I haven't been to Fisherman's Wharf or Pier 39 in a long time, so I don't know what the food options are. However, if you're willing to walk, you could stop at the Ferry Plaza and visit the Capay Farms store. We get our produce delivery from them, and we originally picked up their flyer at the Ferry Building.

If it's a nice day the stroll from the Ferry Building to Fisherman's Wharf is lovely -- great views of the city and the bay. But I won't kid you -- it's about 15 blocks' worth of "stroll."

On a non-food note, DS was invited to a birthday party at the (relatively)new Aquarium by the Bay a few weeks ago, and he and DH were both pretty impressed. It's no Monterey, but might be a good option for the kiddos in your group.

Have fun!

you will enjoy this trip so much!
yes, you can going into the MarketPlace at the Pier 39 (altho i may have the number wrong--susanrows? you live there and can be more specific? you will know which pier it is because you will see that it is a marketplace, and it is super popular. in the mornings on weekends, there is a farmers market in there where you can get loads of fresh stuff for a meal. even without the FM, you can find little markets inside to buy lunch fixin's, including grab-n-go salads)--i did exactly as you described. went in there, got a baguette and the fixin's and some iced tea and had a makeshift picnic at one of the outdoor patio tables with dh. it is a marvelous day trip type of thing, and you will walk your tushie off! we walked the entire embarcadero strip down to fisherman's wharf, it must have been like 5-7 miles -- the bottoms of my feet were feeling it (and i returned home to find my jeans looser--extra bonus!!) have a fabulous time!

Goals:
1. Enjoy life!
2. Be aware, be awake, pay attention.
3. One word 2010: faith
