TUCSON, Ariz. - A University of Arizona professor has invented a sticker that can tell consumers if a fruit or vegetable is ripe. The stickers will be available to growers next year and should make their way to supermarkets within two to three years, said Mark Riley, a UA assistant professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering.

I'm pretty good at selecting fruits. I spend a lot of time in the produce section and I am forever smelling and touching stuff. I'm surprised that I rarely see anyone else doing that. In fact, it makes me nuts to see someone just fly by the pineapples and just grab one, throw it in their cart, and keep on going. I'm assuming people do this because they don't know how to check for ripeness. I've had people ask me how to check when they see me spending 5 minutes picking out a pineapple. LOL

I like this idea since I am horrible with selecting fruits and vegetables. I am pretty good at selecting avocados and a banana peel is a good indicator of its ripeness, but other than that, forget it-and I usually don't make the correct selection. Jill
