a good friend of mine recently called me, terribly upset, because the principal from her dd's school called to say they found diet pills with her dd. first, my friend is from mexico. she did not even know what diet pills are. i have met her dd many times. she is about 15 or 16. an athlete. very pretty. very funny girl. full of energy and life. very happy sparkling personality. looks about a size 4-6. was a cheerleader. now is playing soccer.
in mexico, people do not have enough money to buy food. here, they are taking diet pills.
i guess i am writing this to vent my "what the hell is wrong with our society?!!!" FEELING.
Goals: 1. Enjoy life! 2. Be aware, be awake, pay attention. 3. One word 2010: faith

I had a reassuring conversation yesterday with one of the alumna folks from Porters. Apparently they are doing a lot for self-esteem and eating healthy for the girls. And they even have the sports coaches talking about that.
Be super thin and stop at Pizza Hut for a buffet lunch
Have a BMI of 20 and drink 800 calorie drinks at Starbucks
Wear a size 2 and eat supersized bags of Doritos and Fritos
Be thin and sexy while eating a 2500 calorie burger and fry meal at Appleby's
These things don't match...
Sorry about your friend's daughter, Iz. Too bad our culture does not do more cooking at home and eating with friends and family who love and nurture us. Seems like the Mexican culture is far more sane around food and weight.
What is wrong with our society is that we are bombarded by images of super-skinny celebs and models who live unhealthy lives to be thin. We were recently watching (and I really don't know why) one of those tv gossip shows. It was disgusting. Not one celeb female looked all that healthy. Bones showing everywhere, drawn looking faces. It is sad to think that our daughter's are seeing this stuff. Even though we try hard to instill good behaviors and body image into our children, there is so much more being fed to them through tv, movies, magazines, etc. So many commercials advertise dieting, diet pills, being thin. It's almost portrayed as "if you aren't skinny, then you do not matter". It's very sad.

I have no specific goal(s) right now. I am trying to find the spiritual side of myself that I lost somewhere along the way.
