So is a green tomato just an unripe tomato?

I have pounds and pounds of unripe tomatoes in my garden, and I'm worried that it's going to get too cold here before they ripen. I found a recipe for green tomato relish that would allow me to can (and thus make use of) all those green fruit in my garden...but I'm not sure "green tomato" is the same as unripe tomato!

I have lots of unripe cherry tomatoes on my balcony. I picked the ones I considered big enough and put them on a plate on my windowsill. They go on ripening indoors and we've been able to eat ripe ones that were totally green and hard a week ago.

(My favorite for green tomatoes, though, is sliced, dipped in egg or buttermilk, then in cornmeal, and fried. Or sauteed, really. YUM.)

Cool, thanks!
