I don't know how many of our members might be close to me but we now have a local CSA, Farmer's Market & community garden .
Norcross started having a CSA last year but I did not know about it in time to participate. This year it is back and you don't have to join for a whole year. They do it by seasons. It is too late to join for spring (6 weeks) but summer, fall & winter are still available (8 weeks each). The pick up point is at the corner of Spalding Dr. & Peachtree Corners Circle (about 5 minutes from dd's apartment )
The farmer is totally organic and certified by the USDA. www.grassfedcow.com (they also have beef, pork & eggs but it is a seperate program)
Whistle Stop Farmers Market will be every Tuesday from 4-8 pm at Thrasher Park in Norcross starting June 2 and running till October. They already have 20 vendors (some organic, some not) signed up. There will also be kids activities, demos, & live bands. There will also be a vine tastings at one of the resturants on Main Street (across the railroad tracks from the park).
I am really excited about both of these two things but I am especially excited about a community garden starting up close enough for me to go to it on a daily basis. It cost just $50 per year for a plot (that is less than $1 per week). If you are a member of the Jones Bridge Pool, the garden is free. They will have a water source and a composting source.
We are planning to join the community garden (this weekend ) and then we are going to join the CSA starting with the summer program (if we have the money by the sign up deadline).
Summer Season: July 8- Aug. 26 (8 weeks) $250 Deadline to join: June 17
Fall Season: Sept. 2 - Oct. 21 (8 weeks) $210 Deadline to join: Aug. 19 (my birthday )
in the spring, cool weather crops such as leafy greens, crisp radishes, beets, onions, garlic, and strawberries; in the heat of the summer, vegetables such as corn, cucumbers, peas, peppers, tomatoes, melons, blueberries, eggplant; in the fall and winter, root crops and more hearty greens such as broccoli, butternut squash, kale, turnips, sweet potatoes, apples, collards.
And we are also planning to go to the Farmer's Market.
PS: I just discovered that the CSA has an Alpharetta drop off also. The contact person is wcswan@yahoo.com in case you are interested.
