Hi! My biggest problem is that even though I eat pretty healthy during the day, I am starving by dinner - I don't know if I am eating enough, or just that I am used to eating too much!!!!
I am following WW and usually have about 8-10 points left for dinner, which is a lot, but sometimes I get so hungry that I go overboard!
I am tempted by the South Beach Diet - most people say they are never hungry but still lose weight and eat healthy.
thanks for all the great responses!! I am trying to eat more for lunch - even if it means more lettuce, tomato and cheese on my sandwich, and eat less for dinner.
I do attend ww meetings and have lost 5 pounds, but it has been a struggle and I am trying to find an eating plan that I can stick with for the rest of my life! Larissa
Health columnist JANE E. BRODY notes that "...fiber-rich carbohydrates offer three major benefits to the weight-conscious eater: they hold water in the gut, take longer to digest and some of their calories are eliminated unabsorbed. In other words, they can fill you up before they fill you out."
In my case, my diet includes a lot of toasted whole wheat bread and Shredded Wheat.

I think your hunger has to do with either not eating enough or not eating frequently enough during the day. I strive to eat every 3 hours and I'm never hungry as long as I stay on that schedule, which is almost always on the weekdays. But, on the weekends, I go straight from 2+ hours at the gym to doing errands or going shopping and frequently get off that schedule...when that happens, I will be ravenous when I get back home.
When I started doing this too, is when I lost the most weight. Also, I never felt super hungry, which helped to not over eat, and not feeling deprived.
I have been so busy at work the past few weeks, that I have been skipping my afternoon snack, adn I believe it is one reason I started gaining weight again.

Also, if you are a WW member, explain your problem to your leader. Mine always was concerned about individual concerns and helped us work on how to get through these types of problems.

Others have given exelent suggestions. I have found that going by this saying: "Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince, and Supper like a Pauper" has helped that "starving by supper" syndrome that I had...especially since I do my workout after work and before supper. I never have been a breakfast eater at all, but have gradually trained myself to eat in the mornings and now I try to make that my largst meal of the day..and suprise, suprise, all those people saying that eating a good healthy breakfast makes you eat less through out the day is true!! I also have the luxury of deciding my own lunch time so I try to eat no earlier than 1. And mid morning and mid afternoon snacks are a must.
The soup suggestions are great. I have a couple of very easy very low cal ones that I use. One is from Oprah's website, the Elixr Soup that Wynonna Judd's chef cooks for her.She also has aCauliflower Soupthat is good. I will post the recipe for a cold gaspacho soup made with V8 this weekend...I love that one easy no cook and lasts a week in the fridge.

You say you're following WW but I don't know if that means you are a WW member and go to meetings or if you're just following their philosophy. If you're a WW member, you're already following the healthiest program there is in terms of the formal "diet" programs.
What you want to strive for is a program you can use the rest of your life, not a diet that will take off weight temporarily and then lead to a weight gain when you go "off the diet." WW can be used for the rest of your life. I don't know if the same can be said of South Beach (the one person I know who is on it can't stay on it consistently).

The "zero-point soup" (or something similar to that) was a staple in my diet the entire time I did WW. I still make it on occasion (though I'm more comfortable varying the recipe now), and it's a great help for those "I'm going to STARVE!!!!" times.
What helped me was making the soup, letting it cool to room temp, and putting a cup's worth in ziploc bags. When I got hungry, I ran the bag under some warm water to loosen it up, dumped it into a bowl, and heated it up in the microwave. You could try, too, incorporating the soup into your lunch every day, and moving part of your lunch into the afternoon.

Hi, Larissa. I had the same problem..One thing that helped me was logging my food at www.fitday.com. (recommended to me on this site by someone else!) It's free. It does take a little time, but it helped me see that I was getting a lot of my calories in the evening. Once I started spreading them out, I am no longer so hungry at dinner time. There is a search database to help you with foods that you don't have the nutritional info. I don't do it every day anymore, but when I feel I need to track and see what I"m doing, it helps.
The idea for the afternoon snack with protein and carbs is exactly what I needed.

I agree with Peg. Make sure that you are eating a protein/carb snack in between lunch and dinner. You should try not to go more than 3 hours inbetween meals. If you are eating snack and are still hungry, reach for a piece of fruit, a cup of tea or some veggies to tide you over. When I first started my eating healthy lifestyle, I was STARVING by 5 pm (despite snack at 3 pm). What I did was to make my veggie side dish ahead of time so that if I absolutely couldn't wait until dinner, I had veggies ready to munch on.
As for the South Beach diet, my fil is on it and is constantly hungry. Not to mention that low carb diets in general have to lowest compliance rate of any "diet" and have the highest incident of people gaining back all the weight they lost.
Out of our beliefs are born deeds; out of our deeds we form habits; out of our habits grows our character; and on our character we build our destiny.
I know if I don't have my afternoon snack (too often I'm afraid) that I am in the same boat. Can you look at your points and redistribute to allow a small protein combined with carbs snack in the mid-afternoon? Also, something I've been thinking of trying is making a pot of homemade veggie soup of some sort and having a mug of that as soon as I get home to take the edge off until I can get dinner on the table. Not too many calories but would help the blood sugar crash. Also, if you feel comfortable doing so, if you post what you are eating during the day in general, everyone does a great job of giving feedback on what might be going wrong. Peg
