Maybe sprinkly them liberally with baking soad, let it sit for a while, then vacuum. I feel for you, cate. That smell gives me such a bad headache.

I agree. I've lived in Japan where it's quite humid and you run the risk of getting mildew in your things, so they use mothballs all the time. They get the smell out (and get rid of any dampness) by hanging things out in bright sunshine and fresh air. Try it!
