The grocery aisles are just CRAMMED with sugar and chocolate and holiday “goodies” this time of year. You can’t even walk thru my Safeway because the aisles are filled with stacks of chocolate chips and marshmallows and pie pastries. The milk cases have cookies and cookie dough stacked in front of them. I’m not even sure how many different boxes of truffles Trader Joes was selling… in addition to all of the other holiday “goodies”.

Then we get to the store check out magazine rack and have our choice of “Better Homes and Garden's 100 BEST cookies for you to bake this holiday season!!!!” OR “Jennifer Hewitt - a size two and FAT!!!”

Amazing.

I agree! I think it is ridiculous that in one magazine there are three articles on how to lose 20 lbs by Christmas and seventeen articles on fabulous holiday desserts. A bit contradictory in my opinion. I do not purchase any magazines, ever. I used to. But, each week they contradict the things they told you to do/not do the week before.

I also could just jump through my tv and knock out the actresses/models, who, during an interview, tell the world how they eat pizza, ice cream, chocolate, etc. Please! There may be a very small percentage that get away with that junk food behavior and stay thin but the rest are either lying, purging, or working out 8 hrs a day!

This is sort of sad, in a way... that we even spend one single second thinking about our body "imperfections". It is a shame that we don’t just consider ourselves “normal” or “healthy” or “happy” or some other positive adjective and don’t put any thought what so ever into how flawed we are.

Sort of sad that it takes a “bad” photo of actress to make us feel good abut our own selves.

I’m there with you. KD had a blog about Marlee Matlin… and I realized that I have the SAME exact BMI as she does… but she considers herself fat… so I guess she considers me fat, too… And Lord knows, I’m sure Janice Dickenson considers me beyond obese.

I’m glad I’m almost 50... My body is about as good as it ever is going to be… and I think I’ll just enjoy it… and not spend the next 50 years wishing I somehow looked different.

Maria Shriver may be naturally scrawny… but she is VERY much a member of the media… and would not have been on TV all those years if she didn't wear a size 1.

I think that we live in a TOTALLY and COMPLETELY schizophrenic society.

On one hand, Tyra and anyone larger than a size 2 is “fat”.

On the other hand, 70% of the American population is either overweight or obese.

It is a crazy society that we live in…

I’m just blown away that the host of nearly EVERY show on Food Network this month is saying, “And add two sticks of butter… it IS the holidays” and they are making 6 dishes… all with 2 sticks of butter. We’ve got some stations of TV telling us to put sticks of butter in all of our food. And other networks telling us that a size 2 is fat.

The grocery aisles are just CRAMMED with sugar and chocolate and holiday “goodies” this time of year. You can’t even walk thru my Safeway because the aisles are filled with stacks of chocolate chips and marshmallows and pie pastries. I think the pressure has always been there but now it is worse. When I was in my 20s and was getting my weight under control for the first time I remember how disappointed I was that no matter how hard I worked I didn't look as thin and perfect as Mary Tyler Moore. It has obviously become worse. I worry about the long term effects of young girls starving themselves--things like their future bone density. The only mags I buy any more are things like Good Housekeeping sometimes. I gave up on Shape because it looks like a porn magazine.

kd,

A question from an overseas forum member:

Is there anything YOU can do? You have TV spots and air time - would it fit in to comment on this?

I'm sorry, you may already be doing a lot without my knowing, but I don't watch U.S. TV shows so I'm ignorant. I just figured you're in a great position to make a public statement...

when i was in europe in 2005, it was wonderufl to see women embracing life--not thinking of about how fat they were but savoring their food, and lingering around tables to tell stories and to laugh and drinking good wine. i kept thinking --these women must be laughing their A___ off at us americans.

as a mother of a 14 yr old girl, it makes my job so so hard. i saw maria shriver on oprah, and maria said that her mom used to instill the value of a great idea. they would gather around the dinner table and mom would say "ok, who had a great idea today?" and so maria grew up to focus on her brains and how to address societal issues, not her hips. gee...i try to do the same thing and dd asks me if i can buy her some "skinny jeans" for christmas. ahh--swimming upstream!!!

i have enjoyed reading More magazine. yes, their cover models are thin but they are women my age, and the stories focus more on women starting over, women who had the nerve to fail and to pull themsevles up again, how to manage money in smart ways, what books are stimulating their minds, women in long term marriages, divorced women dating again at age 50, etc.

the models on TV--they look unhealthy. they look weak. they don't look terribly happy. i mean, how fulfilled can you be when your professiona has no interest whatsoever in your mind, your ideas, your character, etc.?

perhaps our society will swing the other way at some point, but it has gone to extremes lately. Good for Tyra. good for Queen Latifah. Good for America.

Goals:
1. Stop thinking like a chronic dieter and start living to inspire.
2. HALT (hungry, anxious, lonely, tired) I will stop and tune in with myself should I experience these things, and respond with something healthy.
3. One word 2008: courage
4. Eat slow and mindfully.

I think the majority of women in Hollywood would look much better if they gained some weight.

I also think that the media gives a lot of attention to how being overweight is bad for your health, but they rarely if ever give attention to the fact that being underweight is just as unhealthy if not more unhealthy than being overweight is.

my husband told me he didn't think Jennifer was a size 2. in other words she didn't look perfect...basically he didn't understand I think that those other pictures are FAKE. I don't think people 'get' that. Anyone remember the Ugly Betty episode where the 'fat' pictures (of the size 2 model) were put in and everyone actually loved it??!!! I wish too that there were more 'regular' pictures out there!

I was watching Janice Dickinson when she made that comment. First of all, Janice Dickinson may be skinny and a former super model but quite honestly she looks like a drag queen. I do not think she is attractive at all. Tyra Banks-by modeling industry guidelines-is fat. But, to the rest of us-she is a normal sized, beautiful woman. I do NOT think Tyra is fat(just to clarify from my previous comment). I think she has embraced life and her body and is not portraying that idea that you have to be a stick to be beautiful. It is disgusting how much airbrushing/touch-ups are done to magazine photos, and you know in movies and on tv that the actresses are loaded with makeup, shot at flattering angles, sucked in by Spanx or whatever else they use. I find overly skinny women, like Courtney Cox and Paris Hilton, and countless others to be gross. They do not have curves, and if you removed their heads from a picture and they are wearing jeans and t-shirts you could put the head of a twelve-yr old boy on those same pictures because the bodies are the same! I can't wait to hear Tyra's response to Janice!!!

Do people really buy clothes and magazines because a size 0 model is on the cover???

I'm the opposite, if I see a 15 year old, 6 ft tall model, weighing 110 lb in an outfit that I think I would like, I immediately say to myself that it probably would look ridiculous on me. I would find it much more helpful to see models who were my age, short, etc...

I have to say that the photos of Jennifer Love Hewitt made me feel loads better about my own body imperfections. I would love to see more pictures like that instead of all this air
brushed fantasy stuff.

America Ferrara was on the cover of Glamour a few months back, and so obviously airbrushed and skinnied down that she looked grotesque -- like an oversized head on a Barbie doll.

The thing is, the content of a lot of these magazines does try to empower women to be comfortable in their own skin, to love their bodies as they are. Why can't the visuals catch up?

I was at the store the other day and saw one of the celebrity rags at the checkout. Jennifer Love Hewitt was on the cover saying "Size 2 is NOT fat!" and I thought "Have all of these people lost their minds?"

My Mom gets me a gift subscription to Health magazine but, with the move in progress, I haven't looked at the latest issue yet. Will check that out. I stopped buying SHAPE mag because the cover girls were getting skinnier and wearing less clothing...it didn't seem to be about fitness anymore.
