Well, in just about a week (Sept. 8th) I'll be doing my first sprint triathlon and I'm still not convinced I will be able to do it. It's a 400 yard swim (easy for me), a 1.5 mile run (not too far but I'm not a good runner), 12.6 mile bike (there are hills - I hate hills, why can't it be flat!?!It's not so much the down, but the up part is horrible!), and another 1.5 mile run (I figure if I make it to that last run, I can walk). I'm nervous and want to back out. I'm still fat and relatively out of shape - what was I thinking!?!

Any advice?

Mel

Thanks for all of the support. I had to laugh...my first thought was, "WOW, now I have to do it!!"

I've been kind of frustrated because it's been so hot (in the 100's)outside I have been doing all of the training on treadmills and exercise bikes. I've been afraid that hasn't been enough, especially regarding the hills on the bike portion. But, I also know I would be mad at myself if I don't do it.

Susan - that saying is from John "the Penguin" Bingham and it's funny that you said that - I have a t-shirt with that exact saying. I haven't worn it because I want to wear it when I finish my first triathlon. I also have a t-shirt that says, "I'm slow, I'm know, Get over it" - I wear that one all the time.

D - Thanks for the edit of my post - it really is better..

Thanks again - the support really does mean a lot!

Mel

Mel, you can do it. You've trained for it. The strange thing is that the three events together aren't that much harder than doing them separately -- you get tired of swimming, and then you're done with the swim. You get tired of biking, and then it's time to run.

Even if you walk part of the run, it's still a huge accomplishment. I bet you'll finish smiling. Big Grin

This is the first year since 2001 that I haven't planned a triathlon. My triathlon this year has been to: write my dissertation, look for a job, and try to pay for it all. I may have to hand over my screen name. Wink

I can't remember the name of the Runner's World columnist who says this all the time -- but I just love the concept:

"The miracle is not that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start."

Go make your miracle, Mel! You'll do great.

we are all going to be cheering you on, and living vicariously thru you!

Goals:
1. Stop thinking like a chronic dieter and start living to inspire.
2. HALT (hungry, anxious, lonely, tired) I will stop and tune in with myself should I experience these things, and respond with something healthy.
3. One word 2008: courage
4. Eat slow and mindfully.

Hmmm....

I want to rephrase your post Big Grin

quote:
Well, in just about a week (Sept. 8th) I'll be doing my first sprint triathlon!

Really, though...You can do each of those things. And are you in it to win it or in it to DO it? I say, make it through. Walk what you need to, and don't race. Make it through, take a picture, frame it with the results, and remember it forever as your FIRST SPRINT TRIATHLON!

Oh, and one of my favorite things I've ever read on this site: TriGirl's "Average-to-Clumsy Triathlete" article.

Challenge Goals:
*10 minutes of unplanned exercise five times a week
*Gym time twice a week
*Socialize at least once every two weeks.

How had your training been going?
If you are prepared, you'll do great!
Plus there is always the added adrenaline rush from actually being in a race which can be huge.

I always run much faster during races because of the energy from the other racers and the crowd : )

Just relax and enjoy the experience!

Hi Mel
My sister is doing one in a week or so too. St. Louis...where are you at? She just did a mini a few weeks ago. She said the swimming was easy for her too and what gave her the leg up (she has been swimming her whole life.).... she bolted to the bikes and took off and saved lots of time. Good for you for doing this. And no don't quit!!!! Just do your personal best!!!!!!! That is ALL that matters!
