Timely for me that this thread popped up again. I'm going to quit my job tomorrow. I haven't been happy there since I got back and some things are happening that are making me even more uncomfortable.

I'm going to sign up to substitute teach while I look for something else.

Isabel,
Great news! If you didn't mention it in your cover letter, be sure to somehow leverage that relationship with the student and his parent. See if she might be willing to make a phone call or drop an email with a glowing recommendation to the athletic director. I bet she will and it might be exactly what you need to get the foot in the door.

Good luck Isabel! Sounds like a great opportunity!

I just wanted to share a little WOOHOO that I'm experiencing this morning. Y'all know that I am a HORRIBLE procrastinator...y'all also know that I just bought a home and will soon be retiring and moving to another state. Talk about a monstrous to do list. Whew.

Well, in the past 15 minutes or so, I just knocked off 2 things from my list that I've been procrastinating about--I cashed in some bonds to give me a bit more of a safety cushion after I put my 20% down on the condo next month, and I put in paperwork to change the savings allotment that comes out of my paycheck. This will mean a lot more money in my paycheck and a lot less in savings--for now--but this is a necessary move during this transition period.

I'm happy with myself. I also got an interim decision from my boss (but need confirmation from his boss) that will help my financial situation with the new home and retirement. We'll see how that all shakes out.

With all the years working in a staffing service for dental personnel I never once thought about contacting another service (non-dental) to help me find a new job! Duh! So, this morning I sent my resume to a local agency that places people in professional/management jobs. I am so scared because I've taken that first step. I know that I have to make a change-financially and for my own emotional well-being so I'll let you know what happens. I worry that because I have been limited to one field of work for so long that I may not be qualified for anything else.

*bump* How's it going, Jill?

I asked for a raise and presented my case (and also the fact that company policy says I should have been promoted at my evaluation last year. Ooops, my *big* boss says. We meant to DOWNGRADE your rating because we didn't think you were ready for a promotion).

The big boss didn't call me back (I left two messages, both after the deadline he gave me). He didn't reply to any of the 3 e-mails I sent (and bcc'ed MY supervisor on). So my supervisor asks him what's up, and after saying that he was surprised I didn't follow up (!!!!!), says that "they" don't promote mid-cycle. <sigh> That's not even what I asked for.

Anyway, I have sent my application to the grad school, requested transcripts sent from my old school(s), and have one recommendation letter lined up. So that's all on track! And f you to the boss.

Challenge Goals:
*10 minutes of unplanned exercise five times a week
*Gym time twice a week
*Socialize at least once every two weeks.

Hee.

"My long term goals in the library? To read every book in it, of course. Isn't that what we're supposed to do?"

They're all library related. How can they help me improve, how can I improve, what are my long term library goals, etc.

Thanks for the ideas, Diana. I'll see what I can tweak out of your suggestions.

I think you could say that your "career goals" include getting your degree and then seeing what opportunities are open to you after that.

They can help you improve by...well, go with what you know. More training opportunities, more flexible scheduling, more mentoring...all those things that you know, in general, make it easier to succeed.

Are the long-term goals for that JOB, or for your career? If they're for the JOB, then I think it's a silly question and I'd say that to my boss. If it's for your career, go vague. You want to examine growth opportunities. Spend time in other departments to see how they function. Get a certification in something or other.

I have a meeting this afternoon with my boss and her boss. Her boss was on the panel that decided not to promote me. I've been printing things out to take with me, and clicked a button I hadn't clicked before, and was given a "Action" list based on the overall rating of the review. I got the highest rating possible on my review. Per the company's "Action" list, that means an *automatic promotion to the next level.* Aut. O. Matic.

Say what?

So I've got a call in to HR to see if it means what it says it means. And if it does...well, I've got a HUGE question for the boss's boss this afternoon.

And...I've put off my lunch for 30 minutes since reading this, because my first impulse was to eat something. I'm trying to wait a bit so I can STOP associating unpleasant feelings (like anger, confusion, and overreacting) with eating.

I have no idea what to do. I was handed a performance evaluation sheet today. Ugh. For the job I'm not so fond of.

Here's the dilemma. How do I tell them what I've accomplished at work (not much since I don't have tons to do), how they can help me improve (which is really a kicker since I hate my job), and what my long term goals at the job are...all without lying.

This isn't going to be fun because I'm not fond of my boss, she doesn't like my attitude (which admittedly is a bit on the grumpy, defensive side on the wrong day), she knows I don't like my job, probably suspects I don't like her, and I really kind of don't care about this review.

On the other hand, I haven't done anything to not warrant my yearly increase in pay. (You pretty much have to steal or destroy the actual property to have anything negative happen to you here and I haven't done anything like that.)

I've tried to answer in neutral tones, and just scribbled what I've done, but I couldn't come up with much that is being honest and something that they want to hear.

I guess I'll be getting to give my newly found Beck skills a good run for their money pretty soon. Roll Eyes

In the past I've expressed an interest in Criminal Justice/working with Juvenile Probation. I still have an interest but I have sent out interest emails to several colleges about their paralegal programs. Many years ago I looked into paralegal schools. Something about this feels right. With CJ, I never actually brought myself to request further info. There are so many avenues you can take as a paralegal. I'm not sure if I should get a certificate or go for the AS degree. There is a BS degree as well but that will have to wait. I am very excited about this(and a little nervous), and I waiting patiently to hear from these schools.

Jill, as a paralegal myself, the one thing you REALLY need to make sure you do is get into an ABA approved paralegal program. If you already have a B.S/B.A. the certification should be enough.

Thanks Dawn!! I have an AAS degree, in dental hygiene. I doubt any of the credits will transfer since my degree is from 1991. All three schools are ABA approved. I'd love to email you or talk to you more sometime about your career and your education.
Thanks,
Jill
