Good luck!

Life is like a roller coaster, with lots of ups and downs, but the curves, spirals, loops and corkscrews are what make life interesting.

will be thinking of you in 2.5 hours, with all toes and fingers crossed, my incense burning, and active buddhist chanting going on.

Goals:
1. Stop thinking like a chronic dieter and start living to inspire.
2. HALT (hungry, anxious, lonely, tired) I will stop and tune in with myself should I experience these things, and respond with something healthy.
3. One word 2008: courage
4. Eat slow and mindfully.

Thanks for the support. Now I just have to figure out WHICH pants and WHICH sweater.

Brie, the next four years will go by whether you take the courses or not. The difference is, where you will be when they're over. I think you should go for it.

Isabel, I admire the way you're not giving up. Coming up with Plans B, C, and even D if necessary are the way to get where you're going. That applies to careers AND weight loss, right?

Susan,

I agree that you have made a wise choice for your interview attire.

I'm from the dinosaur days and was always told the appropriate attire would be what is worn by what someone in the next step up would wear. Under the more relaxed atmosphere, your decision fits.

Liz,

Go for it.

Brie,

If not now, when? It's never a convenient time. I know you'd make a great physician's assistant. You'd listen!

Yeah, that sounds reasonable. To me, she's given you carte blanc (or however you spell that) and made it clear that they aren't looking for an impression by your clothing choices and I agree you are at more of a risk to make it seem as if you didn't listen. What about something you would wear to church on an ordinary Sunday? Does that help?

Good luck!

Best of luck on the interview Susan and I agree that you can't go wrong with your choice of clothing. Sounds like a suit would be way too formal but it's not like you want to show up in cut offs either!

Iz - sounds like you are finding a way to put your law degree to good use practicing law that will be meaningful to you. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the right opportunity comes your way.

I'm in total limbo right now. I won't be back to work for many months and I've been doing some soul searching as to whether I want to go back at all. Ideally I would love to go back to school. I've doing research on various masters programs and I have to say that if I'm totally honest, I keep falling back on my initial dream in life...to go into medicine.
I found an amazing physicians assistant program in our area but it would take 4 years if I went back full time plus I would need to take anatomy and microbiology which I didn't take as an undergrad.

I don't think the timimg is right to do this but I may at least start taking those under grad classes at some point.

Dh thinks I'm nuts especially with him traveling more but I'm not ready to close the door on this.

My short term plan once my sling comes off is to volunteer at our local hospital and hospice. That will at least get me in the right environment.

as for me...
i am re-certifying my personal trainer credential. at the same time, i am actively looking for employment as an immigration lawyer serving latinos in our area. i opened the local spanish newspaper to see who is advertising. and i found an attorney who is local. i looked at his website and i liked what i saw. so i started to jot down major talking points last night. i spit out a first draft today and emailed it to a friend for editing. i probably need to polish the resume some more, and then hopefully, i can get things out by early next week. i also registered for a Spanish for Lawyers workshop in February. Dawn, wish you were here to converse with me in Spanish!

if things don't pan out with the lawyer, then i am going to network at the february workshop and take down names of people i can contact in the future about employment. if that does not pan out, i will think about just opening up my own office (a huge leap of faith)

i think your idea of slacks, sweater and a nice jacket is a nice compromise between their "casual" culture and your realistic need to make a good professional first impression.

Had to go looking for this thread. Been a while since we checked in with the job-seekers. How is everyone doing?

Me, I have some news and a question. I have an interview later this week with a non-profit organization. I'm meeting with the founder who has mentioned twice that the office is extemely casual -- "as in, I'll probably be wearing bike shorts." She said sometimes people dress up for interviews and it's a little embarassing.

So what DO I wear?!? I was thinking of a sweater and slacks and maybe a tailored jacket, just to be sure I look professional. But I also don't want it to seem like I didn't listen. Any ideas or suggestions? (Normally, I would welcome suggestions that involve needing something new, but the interview is Friday, and I just won't have time.)

Thanks in advance for your help!

I am sad to report that I spoke to the recruiter this afternoon and the company has declined to interview me. He said he was still trying to find out what was going on. Said he also had another potential position he thought might be a fit but it didn't sound near as good in the few descriptors he used to describe it. I'm bummed out beyond measure. Frowner

As another someone who edits for a living, I ditto what Diana said. Either it's a writing sample or it's an editing sample, but a "writing sample of editorial skills" means nothing to me.

My boss wanted a writing sample. If they came to her with typos, misused words, or strange punctuation, she knew not to hire the people.

(While maybe not exactly what you were looking for, here is a link to a story that should resonate with the group. I keep up with the subject because it came across my desk at work and incensed me.)

Ugh, that is horrible. I have read about a lot of these types of cases in China.
