I wanted to start a thread so that anyone facing career challenges/changes/planning could come here to talk about these issues. It's my intent to come here every once in a while to post a homework type question. I welcome others to do the same. It'll also be a great place for some accountability if you need some of that for tasks that will move you forward with what you are trying to do. Post your to-do list, your challenge to yourself, your request for support or celebration, whatever you need.

I imagine this thread will keep popping up to the top so if you are reading this days or months after we started, don't hesitate to jump in.

Peg

There is an old saying that goes something like "The devil you know is better than the one you don't" which I think applies here. hehe

Congrats on the new old job and getting more hours!

September Challenge Starting Goals:

1. Change after-lunch cookie or Dove Promise to fruit at least 3 days per week.

2. Get back to having dinner (which for me is a light meal or snack, not a full meal) by 6-6:30 p.m.

3. When having after-dinner dessert, have it by 8 p.m. then nothing but water after 8 p.m.

So I got called into HR today with no warning. (Having your heart stop midweek is always an interesting thing. Eeker) I'm being transferred back to my old job (but with the offices in a new area so no health problems). I'm actually excited about it.

In June I'll pick up 8 extra hours each week (extra money is always good). I'm trading one control freak of a boss for another, but the new one is an old boss who I can handle, which is far better than the current/soon to be old one. Big Grin I've been so frustrated with the current/soon to be old job that I'm going to make the new one work, until I finish my degree, anyway.

1. Stop thinking like a chronic dieter and start living to inspire.
2. HALT (hungry, anxious, lonely, tired) I will stop and tune in with myself should I experience these things, and respond with something healthy.

I told my boss that I'm wanting to take business management classes and that I'm going to need off Thursday afternoons. He is totally fine with it and he said he thinks it is great that I want to do it! We have not spoken in length about it but I'm guessing on some level, based on the size of the company, that he knows I am not looking for internal advancement and will one day be leaving. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted. The hardest part was telling him. The rest should be easy, or easier.

Yeah, I'd much rather not miss work and take them at night but these classes are offered during the day only. I'm hoping to take all the gen ed classes and electives online.

It sounds like you are taking classes WITHIN your workday instead of IN ADDITION TO your workday (which is what I did), so I suppose that isn't going to be as bad. But how are you going to get away with being gone 6 hours of an 8 hour workday when the training is not related to your current job?

I do plan on telling him the truth, but as you said, maybe not 100% of the truth. I have decided to stick with two classes. They will be 12:15-2:55 and 3:05-5:30. I realized three classes would be overwhelming. My job hours can be flexible, it is not the kind of business that we must operate certain hours. It is mostly phone/email work. Our clients have set hours but I can always communicate with them via email or the next business day if need be. I don't take a lunch break most days and I am planning to make up the 5 hours somewhere else during the week.

I think for now my best bet is to just tell him I am pursuing a business management degree and leave it at that. I can apply management classes to my current job, what we are learning is not strictly hospitality related.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Jill

My opinion is that you should not outright lie to your boss about the classes. That doesn't mean you have to tell him 100% of the truth, though. Perhaps saying you are taking classes to further your education, etc.

I would ditto Judy about not trying 3 classes while working. I did 2 classes a semester at night while working full time for 4 years and it was quite a grind. Adding another class is going to mean you're either going to slip in either your grades at school or your performance at work or you will feel completely overwhelmed and unhappy...or all of the above.

Congrats on your class Jill!!!!

As for you boss, if it were me I would keep it simple and just tell him that you are taking a class. No need to get into the whys.

Jill,
Congrats on your grade!! Big Grin
I don't know what you should tell your boss since I don't know him or his personality but I would think twice (or more) about taking 3 classes while working full time.
You don't want to overextend yourself and cause your grades to slip (or possibly problems at work).

Tomorrow is my first college final. I only took one class this semester and I currently have a 97%! The final is worth 10 points so I'm not overly stressed or worried. I know the material and feel pretty confident right now. Just one baby step in my quest for a new career! Next semester I am taking 2, possibly 3 classes. I have a question: I have to tell my boss about these classes. The one I took this semester he was not aware of because I was only out for 1 1/2 hours on Tuesday/Thursday and since he works in another state and is hardly in I was able to pull it off. These 2 classes will be 12-6 on Thursdays so I have to tell him. Do I tell him I am taking classes to at some point move on to a new career OR just tell him I am taking business management classes to further my education and that it will benefit me and my current job? He is a pretty fair and nice guy. But, a job is a job and I worry that if he thinks I will be leaving he may want to replace me. I've been with this company for about 7 years. It is not a company that would offer any type of advancement so he will know I am not looking for a promotion within this company. Has anyone been in this situation? I would hope that he would be happy that I am trying to improve myself but I also know the company is his primary focus.
