Week 7 of the Daybook

I don't know what got into me. Somehow I ended up buying tons of goodies that I'm going to have to throw away in Week 7 of the Daybook!! (I peeked & looked ahead.)

I had a good reason (yeah, yeah) for all of them:

1) Christmas candy: half price, plus specialty varieties like the cherry cordial Hershey kisses you can never get.
2) 5th Avenues: hard to find! (does anyone else love these way better than Butterfingers?)
3) Pop Tarts (?!): I had an itch for the nostalgia, I guess. I have not bought Pop Tarts in, gosh, 30 years!
4) Pepperidge Farm entertaining cookies: 2 boxes (!!!) no excuse whatsoever.

Although I suspect this was triggered as childish rebellion to dh's being the food police, I must accept responsibility and do the right thing =forget any notion of eating all these goodies prior to Week 7; I actually tried to figure out a way to parcel them out!

The only redeeming thing in all of this is, I have not yet opened any of them. I'm embarrassed and shocked at myself nonetheless! Frowner

Can anyone relate?

Grace

For me, your statement is really the truth and I know it because I keep things around for months and months but when I'm in the wrong place emotionally or stress wise, that's when it becomes a problem. Peg

I read the whole Daybook over the weekend, and I found that there is an ebb and flow in the weekly homework regarding this issue. In one of the weeks, KD talks about having times in her life when she can keep the stuff in the house, and times when she knows she can't deal with it.
That is what I'm looking forward to in the Daybook, as we go through the homework together: some weeks will speak to us, and confront us, to a different degree. I think it will be a year of positive, proactive thinking and behavior, and can't wait to see how it will impact my life all-around!

I've been able to keep it in the house this past year. I've got No-Pudge-like brownies in the freezer and a pint of ice cream.

But there have been other times where I couldn't/wouldn't keep it in the house because I would just eat the whole carton.

Currently, I don't buy or keep a lot of junk in the house... because we don't eat it.

I don't really see the point of keeping chips or cookies or candy in the house... just in case we might want some. We would just eat it and none of us needs it. My kid snacks on fruit and popcorn. If there were cookies in the house, he'd snack on those. I don't see the advantage of replacing healthy food with junk food.

If we want cookies or chips with lunch one day... we know where to buy single servings.

Works for my family.

I just realized last night that there's been a half gallon container of chocolate ice cream in our freezer for almost a month! DH bought it as dessert for a dinner party we gave the first weekend in December. I admit to dipping into it once or twice, actually measuring a half cup into my bowl. But over the past few weeks, I just forgot about it. That's huge for me!

OK, it may have had something to do with the other tempting stuff that found its way into the house for the holidays, but really, the avalanche of sweets didn't begin till Christmas Eve. So I'm counting the ice cream as a victory.

Grace, I've been where you are, but it was back when I was single and no one else ever saw the inside of my cupboards -- or the containers in my trash can. If you really can't bear to just throw it away, ask DH to hide it or take it to work or donate it. Do you go to PTA meetings or church social events? Everything but the Pop Tarts would be gone in minutes at the coffee hour at my church. On the second thought, maybe the Pop Tarts would get eaten, too, but nobody's ever brought them before!

I think this is one area that people often feel very strongly about and so there is a lot of support on the board for keeping a clean pantry. I don't think however that it is universally true that having it in the house is stressful/detrimental/etc for all of us. This is definitely a place where each of us has to figure out what does and doesn't work. I know that KD, Denise, Sandy and others have a lot of luck keeping the house clean but I personally don't have problems having it in the house in general. I know others that have specific things that they can't keep in the house but other things are fine.

For me, your statement is really the truth and I know it because I keep things around for months and months but when I'm in the wrong place emotionally or stress wise, that's when it becomes a problem. So I just wanted to tell you that it might not be denial. Only you know though. Smiler

I personally would not be purging my pantry on Week 7 (or any day of the year) no matter what KD says. Not because I don't think she knows what she's talking about but because I've done the work to know that it's ok for me. That may not be true someday down the road and that's what the trick is I think. Knowing when it isn't still ok and being willing to ditch it then. Whether that is every single day like Denise and Sandy approach it or whenever I feel it's necessary like I do it, it's the skill of being able to ditch stuff (trash, work, others, whatever and there are strong opinions about those options too Big Grin) that is really the thing you are after.

Oh Patty I love you! Me too! I need a little of the fun food!
Frankly, if I have none of the fun food in my house, and get a craving, I become insane! I try to substitute with numerous unsatisfying foods, and have ultimately left the house and bought the Fritos (or whatever) and eaten them too!

Thanks guys! Let's go for it together on Jan. 2!

Grace.

What you did was just what I thought I might do if I attempted the stores after Christmas. I have been tryinging really hard to just stay home with kids and clean out the pantry. Now if my kids would just finish off that darn fudge my thighs would have less on them...lol

Need to reorganize the pantry and hide those cookie mixes and stuff to the back when needed for the PTA or something not my stress mode instead. Or I might just box them and give it to the local food pantry. Anyhow how well do you do with the portion control thing? I'm mean would shouldn't take all the fun foods away just moderate and exercise will help.

I know with the amount of fudge I have put away this holiday season I have stepped up a notch in my Karate class and even went to Blue Belt last night (I'm pretty soar today from it though) only three more colors till my black belt. Yeah!!!

Yes ma'am!
By the way I've leafed ahead and found in Week 22 ("Environmental Protection Agency") kd advises doing "regular clean sweeps". I guess she understands that we are human and can fall prey to backslides, and that we must regroup and refocus!

Also ... I can't bring myself to throw them away! But I am currently job hunting so I think I'll bring them to the jobseeker center and the library I frequent.

Thanks guys for your understanding and sharing! Smiler

Something else that is only available at this time of the year are the Oreo's that are coated in white frosting. They are great to use for showers (or weddings). Just put a small dollop of icing on top and stick on a plastic baby or bootie or diaper pin or wedding bells or rings.

My questions is: What are you going to do with them NOW?
I would suggest returning them (if possible), giving them away to a food bank or retirement community, or (my favorite) sending them down the disposal.

I could not have this stuff in the house. It would make me stressed and eventaully I would eat some or all of it.

I had to get some mint M&M's cuz they are never available any other time of year...unlike you...I did open them and they've been calling my name and ending up past the lips and probably on my hips! Oh, how I hate those cute little guys Mad

I too have been flipping through the daybook and would love to scour the whole thing for inspiration, but am trying to hold off. I love surprises and don't want to ruin the whole thing!

You are not alone in this journey of changing old habits that die hard.

Kat

Goal:
Exercise at least 3 times per week.

Remember the positives.

Get the munchies under control!

Did KD wind up using some of the tips she asked us for?

I just finished reading through the daybook...I'm justifying it by the fact that I'm a homework captain in Jan. Big Grin

Yes, she did use some of the tips, and sometimes mentioned the board or one or two people's comments or success stories. She also refers to the show sometimes.

Life is like a roller coaster, with lots of ups and downs, but the curves, spirals, loops and corkscrews are what make life interesting.

I just had my dh take two containers of sugar cookies to work to get them out of the house. I still have half an apple pie and fudge. The fudge is my fault. I made it thinking it would get given out. Then the people I was going to give it didn't make it. I learned a long time ago not to shop hungry. I've done it to many times.

You must have been shopping when you were hungry. The best time to shop is right after you have had a good meal.

I have been browsing ahead also.
