I have somehow convinced myself that Chili's to Go is not fast food. After all, I have to call ahead and order and they cook it. Right?? Well, when I made my call and ordered my guiltless food, followed by my kid's food, the girl said..."would you like fries with that?". Of course I would like fries!! The question should be "should you have fries with that?". If she had posed the question the right way, I would never have come home with fries. Furthermore, I would never have had fries in my house to eat. I was just being honest, yes...I would like fries. However, I shouldn't have fries. Anyway, I ate the fries, so shame on me. Technically they weren't my fries anyway!! They were for my boys, I stole them. That makes my offense worse!!

Before calling in your order..Write it down and make sure you say that you want to sub vegetable for the fries..Maybe this will keep you from ordering them..

It's not low-fat, but I grind hamburger from chuck roast.
From the Boston Globe:
"In "How to Cook Meat," Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughby suggest using chuck, which contains enough fat for a ground beef mixture (typically 80 percent lean and 20 percent fat). Many of the more expensive cuts of beef don't have enough marbling or fat; if ground, they will produce dry hamburgers. "The All New Joy of Cooking" also recommends chuck roast."
It's been 2 years since I started focusing on buying really high-quality stuff. . .we might only have 1/2 lb of ground beef, but it's ground sirloin, and we'll eat smaller meatballs and like the way they taste more.
One of the most rewarding things has been realizing that most of the chain restaurants don't do the cooking thing any better than I do, which has really cut a lot of restaurants out of our/my repetoire. I just won't spend money on something that I can make better and cheaper. D
D, I feel the same way! Good to be aroudn like minded people.
MaryJo, I battle the insane idea that bites from my dd's plate are "free" and that I am entitled to them as I am the Mom and do the food prep. Today I think that this game I play with myself is funny. Other days it is really rough. A dear friend reminds me never to "should" myself. Says that I could pass up the fries or the bite of leftover bagel is easier on my than saying I should do...
I still LIKE fries & burgers & stuff. But I don't like the way they're fixed at most places. Chili's fries are too salty. McD's are too salty (and their burgers taste funny). Bennigan's stuff doesn't taste. . ..good.

When we do go out with friends who want to go to a chain place, it's much easier to get a salad, because I know I'll be grumpy at the money I wasted on anything else.
Not saying that there isn't a need and a time for McD's and Chili's, just that those needs & times are farther & farther apart now.

I hear ya, MaryJo! Fries are one of my weaknesses. Unfortunately, I live right next to a McDonald's so, when the weather is nice and I'm driving around with the windows down, the smell of fries is enough to make me drool!
I do allow myself fries every month or so, but not usually McDonald's. Usually, I go get a good hamburger at Chili's with fries and eat half the burger and half the fries and take the rest home for another meal. Allowing myself those special treats keeps me from craving them all the time and also keeps me going with eating healthy because I don't feel resentful that I've had to give up everything.
I look forward to the day when I no longer have a taste for food like that, but I'm almost 1 1/2 years into this journey and that day isn't even close to being here yet. I suppose if I denied myself these things completely or maybe only once or twice a year, I could more easily break the lure of them in my mind but, as of yet, I don't feel the motivation to do that.

I'm with you. I eat fries once in a while. I've eaten them twice since July, I think. The rest of the time, I'm just better if I don't get started. I don't eat the leftovers off my kid's plate for the same reason!

I really have trouble with the "few" concept. I try, don't get me wrong. I will go and have a cheese stick and feel glad that I can have the cheese stick and don't have to give it up completely. Once I eat it though, I feel the pull of the package in the fridge. I think I am better to have none and forget what they taste like.

Oh, it's a good thing there isn't aChili's in the town that we live in! I'd be LIVING on their chicken enchilada soup! I LOVE that soup! It is SOOOOO good! Their black bean quesadillas are a big favorite too!
Blessings,
Lori
