It is a long story, but DS had another siezure. He hasn't had one since he was 4 and now he is 6. The Doctors have put him on anti-siezure medication. The meds they put him on is sensitive to calcium. He has it in the morning and at night. He can't eat calcium products within a couple of hours of his medicine. He is tired of toast and peanut butter and of oatmeal made with water. Eggs, he just sighs now. I found some almond milk that isn't calcium enriched. My question is this: Can you cook with this stuff. Pancakes and breakfast items that need milk to make. I am getting tired of telling him he has to have cereal for snack or lunch. I am hoping with his up coming Doctors appointment when they have all his tests back they can give us more information. Like if he could out grow this. They will change his meds then to a more long term one. I am hoping that he will not have many side effects and the meds won't be sensitive to foods.
thanks, Michelle
p.s. At least this one didn't put him in ICU like the last one.
This must be so hard for you, Michele. Hang in there!
My DH is sensitive to dairy products so I bake with rice milk all the time. Haven't had any problems. I've had less success with cooking -- as in using rice milk in sauces and such. But I would think in a pancake mix, no problem.
Something to check out. Have his brain scanned for anurisms (sp?).
DH started having seizures when he was about 4 years old and had them the rest of his life. They thought he had epilepse (sp?) all that time but apparently he had an anurisum the whole time and they just never found it.
A year and a half after we were married he went into a coma and the doctor said it was due to an anurisum at the front of his brain, where the main blood vein to the brain divides to the left and right sides, bursting. After the initial surgery, the doctor also said that he found another one in a different location that was very, very old and shriveled up. He said this old one could have been what was causing the siezures, not epilepsy. He had had several cat scans prior to that, both before I met him and afterward, and they had never seen that old one. The doctor said they are hard to find unless you are specifically looking for an anurisum when the cat scan is done.
Michelle- Sending my best around the blood tests. You are not whining at all- this is very, very trying, I am sure. You can always come here to share, vent or ask for support.
I just spoke with the doctor. His medicine levels are to low in his blood. (still at risk for a seizure) We have to up his medicine, again. We just got him back to normal from the last upping. He went major hyper for 3 days. It makes him nervous that translates in him as hyper and more intense. Not to mention the blood test next monday. They tramatize him. I pray everytime that the blood test doesn't send him into another seizure. Sorry, I'm whining. I'm just hoping we aren't still dealing with this when school starts in August. Michelle
The soy milk is enriched with calcium and he is allergic to MSG. I would have to double check about soy and MSG. It hides in everything. I always have to make sure the level of MSG he eats is safe for him. I am afraid to much MSG would trigger another seizure.
how frightening for you! i am so sorry you guys are dealing with this, and i hope in time, the seizures become a thing of the past.
have you considered soy milk?
Goals: 1. Stop thinking like a chronic dieter and start living to inspire. 2. HALT (hungry, anxious, lonely, tired) I will stop and tune in with myself should I experience these things, and respond with something healthy. 3. One word 2008: courage 4. Eat slow and mindfully.
I use water for my pancake mix so I suspect you would be fine with the almond milk.
I'm so sorry though that you are going through this Michelle. One of our close friends has a daughter that had seizures from age 3 - 6 but is now 10 and being weaned from the last of her seizure meds because the neurologist thinks she's out grown them. I hope your son will out grow his too. I know how scary it can be to witness.
Big hugs!
