Studies show we eat between 150 and 200 more calories on weekend days than we do during the week.

1) Why do you think that is?

2) What are your weekend splurges?

3) If you're going to indulge this weekend are you going to bump up your workout and how?

1) Why do you think that is? I know it is because I have more time to spend on not doing things. No schedules to meet, etc.

2) What are your weekend splurges? JUNK FOOD

3) If you're going to indulge this weekend are you going to bump up your workout and how? I don't usually because the pool is off limits to me, but there is always my bike, I think I'll give it a spin this weekend. Good idea!

It's never too late to get it right.

i do allow a small splurge on the weekends. not nearly as much as i used to. i put in a little extra time in the gym saturday morning to make up for it. the 200 calorie splurge is not my problem. it is the 600 calories splurge on the weekend that is the hum-dinger! for ab out a month, i have been pretty ok about the weekends. but the temptation for the 600 items is always there.

Goals:
1. Stop thinking like a chronic dieter and start living to inspire.
2. HALT (hungry, anxious, lonely, tired) I will stop and tune in with myself should I experience these things, and respond with something healthy.
3. One word 2008: courage
4. Eat slow and mindfully.

1) Why?
Weekend meals are relaxed and less rushed. And people eat out more on the weekends. I know we eat out more on the weekends because we are always on the go.

2) I am like D when it comes to weekend eating. I don't usually consider it a "splurge" if it is a part of my overall plan for the week (not that I actually HAVE a real plan). If it is something over the top and out of the ordinary then it could be considered a splurge. Like if we have breakfast at The Skillet on Sat AND Sun instead of just on Sunday.

1) Why do you think that is?

For me personally:
a. I go to work every workday with an insulated bag filled with nearly everything I'm going to eat over the 10 1/2 hours I'm at work. It's already cooked, it's healthy, it's portion controlled and all I have to do is heat n' eat (or in the case of snacks, peel/open n' eat). Compared to this weekday anal retentive planned food consumption, the weekends are like an orgy of unplanned delights.

b. Most weekends, I have a LOT of downtime, so with downtime can come boredom and with boredom can come fridge grazing.

c. Because of a., I tend to wait too late on weekend days to eat; i.e., I wail until I'm overhungry to start thinking about dinner, because I'm used to having everything cooked and ready to eat. Sure, I could make ahead meals for EVERY day instead of just WORK days, but I would be very unhappy never having any ability to be spontaneous or eat what I'm in the mood for.

2) What are your weekend splurges?

#1 - Sweets (baked stuff bought in 1 or 2 serving quantities from the grocery store or, just recently, stuff baked at home in small quantities using the Small Batch Baking cookbook).

#2 - Once in a while, eating out or ordering in.

3) If you're going to indulge this weekend are you going to bump up your workout and how?

Nope, I'm doing good to try to get 2-3 days of exercise in a week since my injury. Bumping up exercise is definitely not high on my list these days...and even before the injury, bumping up exercise because of something I ate that was "off plan" wasn't generally part of my philosophy.

Personal Healthy Habits Challenge - 10/1 to 12/31/08:
1. Exercise: Get back to consistently working out 3-5 X week.
2. Food: Get back to consistently preparing healthy lunches for the week with increased veg servings.
3. Behavior: Reduce intake of sweets.

I don't view "extra" weekend calories as indulgences. I don't have wine with dinner Mon-Thurs AND eat smaller portions, *so that* I can have wine with Fri/Sat/Sun meals. Or, I don't have wine with Fri/Sat/Sun meals *so that* I can use that calorie "bank" for dessert or hot wings.

And I know I'm different from some people, but...150 or 200 calories isn't a huge thing to me. It's the 800 calories while face-first in a bag of Doritos (followed by the 1200 from ice cream) that cause me to gain weight, not an extra glass of wine with dinner on Saturday. I know for others, it's different, but for me...it's just not worth the mental anguish and torture I'd invariably put myself through. I like good food. I like good wine. I like good beer. I like to have fun and be happy, and that's not possible *for me* if I'm agonizing over every food decision--and to me, 200 calories IS nitpicking and agonizing, if I've done well the rest of the week. I'm hard enough on myself in every other aspect of my life Smiler

Challenge Goals:
*10 minutes of unplanned exercise five times a week
*Gym time twice a week
*Socialize at least once every two weeks.

1) Why do you think that is?

For all the reasons everyone else has listed, plus two more. First, on weekend mornings, we're all home and not rushing to get to work or school. So the appeal of a special, leisurely breakfast is very strong. And it's never oatmeal.

Then, there's my ever-present, wicked, evil, "Start Over Monday" habit. I have wrestled with this demon for so long you'd think I'd know all its moves. But it still gets the better of me more often than I care to admit.

2) What are your weekend splurges?

Saturday pancakes, baking with DS, coffee hour treats at church, mall food while I'm shopping (luckily, this doesn't happen very often).

3) If you're going to indulge this weekend are you going to bump up your workout and how?

This weekend, I'm starting a special indoor rowing challenge -- to row 14,000 meters between midnight tonight and midnight on Valentine's Day. That's a little over 3,000 meters a day.

1) Why do you think that is?

Time is less structured on the weekend then it is on the week days.

2) What are your weekend splurges?
Dinner out with my sweetie, maybe a drink or two, or starbucks.

3) If you're going to indulge this weekend are you going to bump up your workout and how?

Right now I'm working on consistently eating well without going to restuarants and the like so I am working on not indulging for a while.
I work out 6 days a week - 3X cardio and 3X weight training. I am not going to bump anything up (although Saturday I get to play exercise catch up since I missed Tuesday. I'll probably do Yoga and then do my weight training).

I eat more than that on the weekends too...

1) Why do you think that is?

- If we go out to eat, it's usually on the weekends. That's also when we tend to get together with friends.
- I'm more apt to have wine with dinner on Friday and Saturday nights.
- I also do a dessert on the weekends.
- We're home more with less to do and I find that I eat more.

2) What are your weekend splurges?
wine, dessert, eating out

3) If you're going to indulge this weekend are you going to bump up your workout and how?
I exercise 7 days/week as it is so no. I just know that on the weekends, I tend to eat more.
Like Denise it works for me.

The only exception is if we're doing a super extravogant meal and then I'll do some extra cardio.

1. On weekends people have more leisure time. Most people equate food with a certain amount of pleasure and leisure is also about pleasure...and why have less of a good thing?

2. Above all, nice dinners Fri thru Sun: pasta bolognaise and red wine (and sometimes cheese for dessert) on Saturday night; cake at the coffee shop on Sunday. Weekend dinners at our house are family prime time and that includes good food.

3. No bump. I swim on Fridays and it's too slippery to walk. I'm working on portion control and have made some progress.

I eat more than this on weekends.
Smiler

1) Why do you think that is?
Restaurants, desserts, less structure, a sense of "entitlement" as in I "deserve" down time AND treats.

2) What are your weekend splurges?
Desserts and a restaurant meal.

3) If you're going to indulge this weekend are you going to bump up your workout and how?
I indulge EVERY weekend and did when I was losing, too.

I've found that I can lose weight if I eat between about 1,600 cals on weekdays and then splurge *some* on weedend days... If I eat about 2,000 calories a day on weekends... I'll still lose weight.

If I eat about 1,800 cals a day on weekdays and 2,500-ish calories a day on weekends... I'll maintain.

I don't count calories BTW... I mostly follow the eating patterns at http://www.mypyramid.gov/downloads/MyPyramid_Food_Intake_Patterns.pdf

And exercise and activity are a part of it... but for me... food is a MUCH bigger factor in losing/maintaining. So I watch food... still exericise... but I can't/won't exercise enough to make up for one of my desserts... because a Saturday night dessert might be 600 calories (and it isn't all THAT big!)

Why? I would guess that people are out of their routine. You're out shopping, running errands or whatever and not home to fix food to eat. A lot of people particulary choose to eat out on weekends. I also think eating out on weekends is probably looked at as more of a treat eating out, than say a lunch during business hours. (You may concede to ordering a salad at "what a-chain", but you won't order the salad or grilled chicken at a really nice restaurant you've been dying to try.)

Depening on your age group, a lot of people are probably drinking extra calories on the weekends by consuming alcoholic beverages which they may not indulge in on the weekends. (Which can also lead to more noshing.)

If you are going to a party, it is most likely on a weekend...

What is my weekend splurge? I would say eating out and/or drinking alcohol. I don't drink a lot, but if I do, it is usually on a weekend. I also fall trap to the eating at a better than usual place on a weekend and not being as careful of what I order. (Not every weekend, but when we do go out.)

Am I going to bump up my work out? Honestly, probably not. Typically, if I am doing all of the above said "evils", then I'm also on the go and have less time to work out. I'm lucky to get a work out in, let alone do more.
