I saw this posted on another list....it is from August, and I did not see it here already. It raises some interesting questions about dieting in general:

When I was a teenager - my family moved into a drug program (not me... I've never used... but other family members...).

We got HUGE donations of Tab soda when it went off the market. Also, got donations of ice cream that tasted fine but was an off color. Got GIANT donations of "last year's" Channel makeup as packaging was changed or colors went out of fashion. We also got VERY large donations of items that corporations thought would sell, but didn't.

I have visions of drug addicts in therapeutic communities across the US in the next couple of years eating low-carb EVERYthing as food products are produced but not sold. Smiler

I need to bring a copy of this article to my local Safeway. Luna bars are no longer being stocked, but a plethora of low carb nutrition bars have been added. Mad

Actually, I want to say Wal Mart has stopped carrying some of the Atkins foods. Some of the products I used to get there are gone.

On the LC lists, they are of course writing this all off. Maybe one day they will wake up!

Thanks for the article!

From a recent business article:

"Yet in the last six months, after two years of rapid growth, sales of Atkins products plunged 32 percent, according to Information Resources Inc. (The figure does not include data from Wal-Mart.) In May, the company had to write off $53 million of unsold and expired food, leading to a loss of more than $58 million for the second quarter and sending the company into financial turmoil, according to a Standard & Poor's report."
