DH and I watched Snow Cake yesterday. It stars Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver. DH was thinking it was going to be a chick flick based on the synopsis: A young girl bums a ride from a man who was just released from prison. They get hit by a semi and she dies. He goes to visit the girl's mother who it turns out is high functioning autistic.
At one point, DH needed a break and asked me to pause the movie until he comes back - that's how much he was enjoying it (he rarely does that - he usually figures he isn't going to miss anything.)
I thought it was excellent. We both thought Sigourney Weaver did an admirable job of portraying an women with autism.
This weekend we have seen two movies I have never even heard of:
1. "Songcatcher" During a visit to her sister in Appalachia, gifted musicologist Dr. Lily Penlerio (Janet McTeer) stumbles upon a musical treasure trove---dozes of Scots, Irish ballads that have been preserved for generations by the local populace and are unknown to the outside world. The music is wonderful.
2. "Irish Jam"In hopes of escaping his angry ex-fiancee (Mo'Nique), Los Angeles con man Jimmy "The Jam" McDevitt (Eddie Griffin) rips off a rap song and enters a poetry contest. Miraculously, his thievery wins him the grand prize -- his very own Irish pub -- and a trip to the tiny Irish town that will become his new home. Little does he know that a greedy local will do anything to get his hands on Jimmy's newfound, um, booty. Anna Friel co-starts and listening to her you would swear she was born and bred Irish to the roots. However, if you saw the move Timeline you would swear she was born and bred French when in actuallity she is British . It is a very funny and enjoyable movie.
And today we watched "Music & Lyrics" with Hugh Grant & Drew Barrymore, which I had heard of but had never seen. I also enjoyed it very much. I kept trying to guess the ending but never did.

Last Sunday & again tonight I have been watching a show called "Human Body: Pushing the Limit" on the Discovery Channel.
It is extremely interesting. Last week I learned that we are born with all the muscle we are ever going to have. They can get larger & stronger or they can get smaller & weaker but no matter how much we exercise we do not "grow new muscles".
I don't know how many weeks it will last but it is on Sunday night at 9pm eastern time.

rented the DVD--willow. a classic. really entertaining, and val kilmer ain't bad on the eyes.
Goals: 1. Stop thinking like a chronic dieter and start living to inspire. 2. HALT (hungry, anxious, lonely, tired) I will stop and tune in with myself should I experience these things, and respond with something healthy. 3. One word 2008: courage 4. Eat slow and mindfully.
I tried to watch The Bourne Ultimatim last night but passed out about 30-40 minutes into it. I am still not sleeping well, so I guess my body takes whatever opportunities it can to get a little snooze! Frustrating, though.
Summer Se7en Challenge Goals: 1. Add back core & toning work + weight work 1X each per week to start. 2. Tackle the Sugar Monster--Have a sugar free mint after lunch and dinner, wait 20 minutes, and reassess the need for a sweet treat.

I only guessed wrong on one thing. I thought maybe Conklin didn't really die at the end of the first one and it was him who was trying to kill Bourne. I also thought he would try to kill the older gray haired gent who had been his boss and had had him killed because he didn't get Bourne.

I saw Snow Cake before I went on vacation. Very interesting, but not particularly uplifting, movie. Sigourney Weaver plays an adult autistic woman. I enjoyed it but don't watch it when you are looking for a pick me up.

I just watched it and found it extremely thought provoking and amazing.
It's a documentary that is basically the quantum physics behind "the Secret" concept.
I had rented that at the urging of my best friend, David, who owns his own copy of it. But it was around the time of the move and I had to send all the DVDs back before I could put my account on hold, so I just sent it back without watching it. I'll have to rent it again.

summer 7 challenge goals: - Meditate every day - Start the day with positive imagery and self talk Out of our beliefs are born deeds; out of our deeds we form habits; out of our habits grows our character; and on our character we build our destiny.
i also loved Juno! i saw the director on Oprah and she speaks just like the main character so i can see where the dialogue came from.
ratatouille is great for kids, not as engaging for adults.
many think that theaters are on their way out. you can download most anything from the internet now. i have friends who download the latest tv shows to their laptop and don't even watch tv anymore. will be interesting to see what the future holds.

I pretty much have only gone to the movies during the day for years so I pay matinee price ($6.50, I think) vs. the too-steep evening prices.
I used to go to the movies alone all the time back when I had my movie review website and was actively updating it. And have many times in recent years even after I was no longer maintaining the website.
For the past year, most of the movies I see in the theatre are when I was coming to Rehoboth and often my friends and I would get together and go as a reasonably-priced outing, but I have been to the movies alone here too.
The last movie I saw in the theatre was Juno. It was fantastic, and I was thrilled to see its writer, Diablo Cody, pick up an Oscar for it.
The last movie I saw on DVD was Zodiac. It was an okay movie but it seemed SO LONG to me.
I am also a huge fan of Netflix. I have Ratatouille and The Bourne Ultimatim here to watch. I tried to watch Ratatouille when I first got sick, and I passed out. What I saw of it wasn't nearly as good as I had been expecting. Hoping to see the rest and have a different opinion.

We use Netflix and love it. We've gotten to watch television shows & miniseries from start to finish, plus the movies we like. When he's out of town or will be working late, I bump the movies *I* want to see up on our list so they come in the mail and I can see them. He does the same thing when he knows I'm working weekends.
Ditto! LOVE Neflix!

The two theaters we go to are $12-$14 for "prime time", and $7-$10 for matinees. We don't go very often. I don't go alone because I don't like going alone to either theater--while they're both nice, one involves parking in a garage and walking through an area that often has aggressive beggars; the other is a place I HATE driving to because of the weird turns and backed up traffic.

My parents love Netflix now, too, and my mom set up an account for HER mom, who doesn't have a computer, and orders her movies as well.
We will go see the movies we're excited about and pay the big bucks to see them on an IMAX screen. The last ones we did that with were...the most recent Harry Potter & the most recent Bourne. So we're kinda choosy about those. He did go see 300 that way with his friends, too. That theater is a 30-ish minute drive.
Challenge Goals: *10 minutes of unplanned exercise five times a week *Gym time twice a week *Socialize at least once every two weeks.
I'm not sure what the price is here these days. When I go, I go with dd & it is usually an early afternoon show. I do know that snacks cost double or triple what the tickets do.
I don't enjoy the theatre experience any more. It is always too cold & too loud. I don't mean the crowd is loud, I mean the movie is loud even with my ears plugged. I prefer to watch them at home.
Last Saturday dd went to the AMC theatre for an Oscar nominated movie marathon. She met some other movie fans there. They saw all 5 of the ones nominated for Best Picture back to back for $30 (12 hours worth of movies). They also got all you can eat free popcorn all day and after you bought a drink you got free refills all day. They also had a pass that allowed them to go & come if there were movies they didn't want to see. She stayed for the whole thing. Her favorites were Atonement & Juno.

I used to go to the movies by myself. Haven't recently because the timing hasn't worked with my schedule. DH doesn't usually want to go to the theater because his hearing isn't what it used to be. I think ticket prices are around $5 for a matinee and $7-$10 for the evening performances, which I would not pay.
The way we see movies is through the library. I got Michael Clayton because right after it came out on the screen, I told the powers that be at the library that I wanted my name on the list. I ended up being #1. When it came out and was processed, I got it.
Our library does not charge for DVDs. They are loaned for five days from the closest library or seven days from the library in the next county. It is very simple to sit at home and peruse and subsequently request movies. Even if I keep it an extra day, the fine is $1 per day.
I can also pop the corn the way I like and that is cheaper than the theater, too.
