And have you ever heard of veggie paints? It is my understanding that is is paint that has been made from vegetables?

Judy,

2 year olds are NOTORIOUS for putting the playdough in their mouths!

That is why I have the kool-aid playdough recipe...got it from the kids' sunday school teacher for the 2s and 3s class at our old church. She started making it about 15 years ago because of all the 2 year olds eating the playdough.

You know, some fun things that my 2 year olds enjoyed doing is finger painting with different types of pudding.....they LOVED that! We did it on wax paper. Doesn't dry to make pictures, but sure is fun to play with and to lick your fingers Smiler We always did that at snack time Smiler

Lori

Thanks to everybody.
I think we will skip the science experiment Smiler.

Dd's charges are 6mo and 2yo.
The 2yo always tries to put the playdough in his mouth. Dd stops him but is concerned that she may not catch him every time. She was looking for a safe recipe.

Here's a finger paint recipe that we really love too!

Homemade Finger Paints

1 envelope unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup cornstarch
3 T. sugar
2 cups cold water
food coloring (I use the food coloring paste that you can get in cake decorating section at walmart or Michaels)
diswashing liquid
white shelfpaper or finger painting paper

Soak gelatin in 1/4 cup warm water and set aside.

In a medium saucepan combine cornstarch and sugar. Gradually add water and cook slowly over low heat, stirring until well blended. Remove from heat and add softened gelatin. Divide mixture into separate containers for each color.

For each color first add a drop or two of liquid dish detergent and then add food coloring a drop at a time unti you have the shade you want (I use a toothpick or popsicle stick to mix it so that I can throw it away).

Store up to 6 weeks in the refrigerator.

For the paints, I can't find any information on vegetable paints, but for watercolors, we use a package of unsweetened kool-aid drink mix (the darker/brighter colors), and mix with 1 tsp. of water in a small dish. Works BEAUTIFULLY!!!!

Judy,

I have tried SEVERAL playdough recipes, and have had mixed results each time with even the same recipe....until I tried this recipe! This recipe is totally foolproof, it is SUPER easy to make, and it is something that the kids can even do on their own. It is EASY!!!!

Kool-Aid Playdough

2 1/2 cups flour (all purpose)
1/2 cup salt
1 tsp. alum (this is used as a preservative, I normally omit it)
2 packages unsweetened Kool-Aid drink mix (or generic equivalent, just make sure it is UNSWEETENED)

Mix together the above ingredients in a large bowl.
Add:
2 cups boiling water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

mix well with a wooden spoon. Turn out onto a very lightly floured surface and knead until soft and elastic and not sticky (I do sometimes have to knead in a little more flour). Let cool completely, store in an airtight container.

We LOVE this playdough!!!! For the entire batch, it costs about .55 cents, unless I can get the koolaid on sale.

Blessings,

Lori

When dd was little, we added a package off Kool-Aid to the mix as a dye. It made the pay dough smell great too.

I wonder if veggie paints might just be strained, pureed vaggies like beats, carrots. Not sure.
I'm remembering...my Mom used to let us fingerpaint with pudding. Oh, thet good old days!

Haven't heard about veggie paints. I have heard of using potatoes as a stamp. I do have several children recipes.

Flubber
2 c white glue
1 1/2c warm water
1 cup hot water 3 tsp borax
mix glue and warm water. Mix and dissolve Borax in hot water. Pour into glue mixture, 1/3 at a time, mixing thoroughly with hands after each addition. One fun thing to do with this is to flatten it out, stick straws in it, and blow bubbles.

Play Dough
1 c flour
1/2 c salt
1 Tbls cream of tartar
1 c water
1 Tbls. oil
8 or 9 drops food coloring
Sift together flour, salt and cream of Tartat. Boil water, oil and food coloring. Pour over flour mixture and mix together. Knead a few times. Store in a plastic Ziploc bag. ** cover play area with news paper or parchment paper.

These recipes are from a book called Kids in the Kitchen Do you need any more. It even has the rock candy that children use to make.
